RE: Session 7 - 502WA4, Facility Floor Plan

The purpose of EVOC 502 WA4 was to prepare a "to scale" floor plan of the room in which I teach the "lecture" part of my course in Information Technology - Computer Repair. The following six criteria were specified:

  1. Comply with all of the General Criteria for Written Assignments.

  2. Draw a floor plan to scale on an 8.5 by 11 inch sheet graph paper (or the drawing may be produced on a personal computer). Typically each square on the graph paper would represent one foot, but can be assigned any value that would result in a "to scale" drawing that will fit onto one page.

  3. Include the overall dimensions of at least one room in the drawing and accurately indicate the location of all doors, windows and other permanently mounted fixtures. Be sure to include information about electrical, telephone and internet connections as well as information about lighting, plumbing, flooring and walls.

  4. Provide Information about equipment (desks, chairs and/or other special equipment) that will be housed in the facility. Make sure to allow for appropriate space needed for student use. Neatly print appropriate information on the actual drawing.

  5. Insure that the drawing is done in a professional manner and that everything included in the drawing is drawn to scale. If drawing on graph paper, use a ruler to make straight lines.

  6. Indicate the maximum number of students that the room can accommodate and insure that the drawing conveys accurate information that represents what the room should (or does) actually look like.

The following sources of information were used relative to this assignment:

  1. Moreno, Leonard - From my own classroom experience

  2. Dan Stewart - Security Manager, District Office

  3. Hugo Schraer- Network Technician, Palmdale High School

I believe that the attached report meets all six of above listed criteria and respectfully request full credit: one point for meeting each of the above listed criteria.

Information Technology - Computer Repair Classroom (Room 205) Palmdale High School

This 24' by 20' classroom is intended to accommodate 45 students.  There are currently a maximum of 29 computer stations that also double as a student desk as the computer and monitor are recessed under the desk.  The desks are equipped with a non-rolling chair.  The instructor is situated in front of the classroom elevated at a higher position as to dominate the classroom vantage points; the desk doubles as a podium and is 4' in height.  Behind the main instructor desk is a permanent teacher desk with faucet/sink.  The classroom was originally designed as a science classroom.  The second desk is used to hold student and instructor supplies including paperwork.  The front of the classroom is dominated by two whiteboards currently being used for daily schedules and a cork board for postings.  The layout of the room could only accommodate 29 of the 30 computers purchased, the master computer is being used for special projects.  Personal belongings for the instructor is kept in a locker (locked).

The west side of the room houses a permanent and fixed counter with shelving's, it runs the length of the wall and has multiple uses, though it was not intended as a computer classroom this counter provides an abundance of storage possibilities and also is where the majority of the networking cabling is being routed under.  The information table is where students are able put any work in progress.  The rear of the classroom hosts a 44U server rack that has a UPS, storage server, classroom server, printer, switches, and wireless.  To the right is the classroom equipment storage cabinet (lockable) for student use of daily equipment and supplies.  There is also another rack of magazines that are available.  A type A/B/C fire extinguisher is available at the entry point of most traffice.  The rear of the classroom opens to another room that facilitates the computer repair lab.  Entry and exit doorways exist to the east of the room in which two are available.

The room has a constant air conditioning rate of 72 degrees Fahrenheit, twelve two pair fluorescent light fixtures light the room, the main telephone system is located to the east of the front classroom that both instructor and students use.  Internet access is available to all computers in the main classroom, the computer lab has access to wireless features.  The classroom has a standard base coating (white), windows can be seen from each side of the west and east side of the room in multiples of eight (they are currently over painted in black to prevent excess light and heat waste).  The floor plan below does not include the computer repair lab and reflects correct measurement and scaling done in Microsoft Visio.
