RE: Session 7 - 502WA3, Course Budget

The purpose of EVOC 502 WA3 was to prepare a proposal for a course budget for the course I teach in Information Technology. The following six criteria were specified:

  1. Comply with all of the General Criteria for Written Assignments.

  2. Provide a brief narrative description of the course (similar to course descriptions prepared for the Course and Unit Plan Assignment from the EVOC 501 course) that indicates what the course is all about and the time frame for course delivery.

  3. List all of the expenses that would be incurred to run the course for one complete term. All items should be clearly identified. List items under separate categories such as facilities, equipment, materials, faculty, staff support and special activities.

  4. Make realistic estimates of the actual expenses based on information that reflects existing circumstances and resources.

  5. Indicate how much money the course is likely to generate (ADA or other institutional standard) on the basis of projected enrollment.

  6. Limit the length of the budget document to not more than two or three pages following the Fred Fudrucker format (see below) or submit an actual budget on forms required by an actual educational institution.

The following sources of information were used relative to this assignment:

  1. Moreno, Leonard - From my own classroom experience

  2. Antelope Valley Union High School District - Main Office

  3. McKinstry, Betsy - ROP Coordinator

  4. Michael Dutton - Principal, Palmdale High School

I believe that the attached report meets all six of above listed criteria and respectfully request full credit: one point for meeting each of the above listed criteria.

RE: Budget for Information Technology Course - Computer Repair (CompTIA A+)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Our Computer Repair Course is designed to prepare our students to the international industry credential that validates the knowledge of computer service technicians with the equivalent of 500 hours of hands-on experience.  The history, technical knowledge and hands-on training of computer repair are reviewed and students are provided the opportunity to take the certification at the end of the course. This is a 90 hour course that meets for 2 hours, five times a week for the calendar year. Of that time 60 hours is spent in the classroom and 30 hours in the repair lab. Maximum enrollment is currently 30 students.  This will be a new course offering with initial cost for setup and equipment followed by yearly support cost.

EXPENSES (calculated for maximum enrollment of 30 students)

Instructor's salary ($40/hr for 40 hrs.) $3,600
Classroom facility expense ($.08/hr x35 machines for 90 hrs.) $252
Lab facility expense ($.08/hr x 4 machines for for 30 hrs.) $9.60
Materials expense:
Software (License, Curriculum, Training, Management) $2500
Hardware (lab equipment, student machines, teacher machine, teacher equipment, computer server) $35,000
Student (desks, chairs, books) $5,000

Total of ALL EXPENSES $46,362

INCOME (calculated for each individual student)

ADA ($8.9/hr for 30 students / 90 hrs.) $24,030
Activity fee ($200 per student) $200
Total INCOME PER STUDENT $1,000

ANALYSIS

With total expenses of $5,000 and income of $1,000 per student we will break even with an enrollment of just 5 students and with a maximum enrollment of 20 students we would realize $15,000 in profit.
