RE: EVOC 501, WR2 Assignment

 

The purpose of the WR2 Assignment was to prepare a list of of topics and a list of related tasks that would be appropriate for the course I teach in Intro to Computer Repair.  The following six criteria were specified:

  1. Comply with all of the General Criteria for Written Report.

  2. Prepare a report that looks neat and professional.

  3. Write out the description of the "occupation" that my course is intended to prepare people for, as that occupation is described in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles.

  4. List and briefly describe at least 5 topics (information about some specific content area in a course relative to the occupation described above).

  5. On a separate list, describe an appropriate specific task for each of the five topics described  These tasks should be written in terms that indicate exactly what it is that students are expected to be able to DO.

  6. Include a deliberate and obvious error somewhere in the report.  Describe this error on a separate sheet of paper that will be given to the instructor only along with the copy of the report that is submitted for grading.

TOPICS AND TASKS FOR A COURSE IN BEGINNING COMPUTER REPAIR

DICTIONARY OF OCCUPATIONAL TITLES DESCRIPTION:

(039.264-010 MICROCOMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST (profess. & kin.)
Installs, modifies, and makes minor repairs to microcomputer hardware and software systems and provides technical assistance and training to system users: Inspects microcomputer equipment and reads order sheet listing user requirements to prepare microcomputer for delivery. Installs or assists service personnel in installation of hardware and peripheral components, such as monitors, keyboards, printers, and disk drives on user's premises, following design or installation specifications. Loads specified software packages, such as operating systems, word processing, or spreadsheet programs into computer. Enters commands and observes system functions to verify correct system operation. Instructs user in use of equipment, software, and manuals. Answers client's inquiries in person and via telephone concerning systems operation; diagnoses system hardware, software, and operator problems; and recommends or performs minor remedial actions to correct problems based on knowledge of system operation. Replaces defective or inadequate software packages. Refers major hardware problems to service personnel for correction. Attends technical conferences and seminars to keep abreast of new software and hardware product developments.

TOPICS for INTRO TO COMPUTER REPAIR:

  1. Information about history of the modern personal computer.
  2. Information about tools and materials needed for computer repair.
  3. Information about personal and computer safety hazards.
  4. Information about hardware components.
  5. Information about basic troubleshooting and diagnostics.

TASKS for INTRO TO COMPUTER REPAIR:

  1. Each student will write out the correct name of the first company to introduce personal computers to the market (IBM) and the correct names of other people or companies who have contributed to the history of personal computers.
  2. Show illustrations and examples of a variety of different tools each students will correctly identify and write out the name of each of the ten tools and materials commonly used in computer repair.
  3. Each student will clearly and correctly write out the components involved to repair a Macintosh based system.
  4. Students will be shown illustrations and examples of different hardware peripherals and be able to distinguish how they appropriately work.
  5. Show examples of different types of hardware components in and out of a computer, students will correctly identify the internal and external types of hardware components in computer repair.
