Instead of traditional wood block prints, however, these images are made of numerous layers of stiff paper. By layering the folds in the samurai's komono, the ornaments in the courtesans' hair and the waving fins of the coi, these images seem to literally float off the page.
Each piece was done in ink and guache, and the komono patterns are handcarved linolium block prints.
