NEW ZEALAND CRICKET
RULES
There are 2 teams of 11 players. The bowler (team A) throws the ball to hit the wicket. The batsman (team B) must hit the ball to protect the wicket. The batsman (team B) is “out” and replaced by a teammate:
- If the bowler (team A) hits the wicket;
- If a fielder (team A) catches the ball before it hits the ground.
When the batsman hits the ball, he starts running between the two wickets to score run (points). He can run until a fielder returns the ball to the wicket.
When all the team B players have batted, it is team A’s turn to bat and score runs.

NEW ZEALAND CRICKET HISTORY
The first recorded cricket match was played in 1841. In the South Island, after the discovery of gold in Otago, many Australians came to the country. This aided in the spread of cricket throughout the area. In 1894, the New Zealand Cricket Council was formed, consisting of representatives from each one of the provinces. The premier contest held each year is for the Plunket Shield, named for a former governor general of New Zealand. English teams regularly visit.
