371 Valentin Janson (1810-1883) Descendants Ancestors Son of Katharina (geb. KUHN) Janson #819 (1778-1850/60) 739 Elisabeth Seibert (1812-1885) Descendants Ancestors The following supplied by Frank Janson: Valentin (b. 15 May 1810) married Elisabeth (b. 14 Jan 1812) in Biblis on 26 Feb 1838 in a double wedding with Valentin's sister Barbara Janson #367 (1 Dec 1814), who married Johann Beckerle #022 (1 Apr 1804). The couples traveled to Havre, France, boarded the ship "Republican" for the voyage to America, and arrived in New Orleans on 29 Oct 1838. They traveled up the Mississippi River and settled in Columbia, Illinois in Monroe County, across the Mississippi from St. Louis. Both families established themselves as farmers in the mostly German community. This is where they lived, raised their families, died, and are buried. In the fall of 1846, Valentin Janson and Johann Beckerle, along with two other neighbors, took the lead to petition the Province (diocese) of St. Louis to establish a church for Columbia. The Immaculate Conception Church was founded and constructed on donated ground with materials and labor supplied by the German farmers. The church was finally dedicated in 1853. After becoming established, Valentin and Elisabeth invited Valentin's mother, the widowed Katharina (geb. Kuhn) Janson #819 (b. 22 Jul 1778 in Klein-Hausen/ Einhausen) near Biblis to America. She arrived in New Orleans on the ship "Edmund Perkins" on 8 Jun 1843, and joined the family in Columbia, IL. She died ca 1850/60 and is buried there. Valentin Janson became a naturalized citizen on 6 May 1862.
