The couples traveled to Havre, France, boarded the ship "Republican" for the voyage to America, and arrived in New Orleans on 29 Oct 1838. They traveled up the Mississippi River and settled in Columbia, Illinois in Monroe County, across the Mississippi from St. Louis. Both families established themselves as farmers in the mostly German community. This is where they lived, raised their families, died, and are buried. In the fall of 1846, Valentin Janson and Johann Beckerle, along with two other neighbors, took the lead to petition the Province (diocese) of St. Louis to establish a church for Columbia. The Immaculate Conception Church was founded and constructed on donated ground with materials and labor supplied by the German farmers. The church was finally dedicated in 1853.
