DM Basics

Band Members: David Gahan, Martin Lee Gore, Andrew John "Fletch" Fletcher.  Past Members: Vincent Clarke, Alan Charles "Slik" Wilder

Started as a trio of Vince Clarke (lead guitar), Martin Gore (keyboards) and Andrew Fletcher (bass guitar) under the name
Composition of Sound.  David Gahan soon joined as lead vocalist and the name was changed to Depeche Mode.

They released their first track, a slightly different version of "Photographic" on the independent Some Bizzare label.   Their first single "Dreaming of Me" was released in early 1981 on the Mute label and peaked at 57 on the UK charts.  After their third release "Just Can't Get Enough" they began work on their first album, "Speak and Spell"

After recording Speak and Spell Vince (main songwriter) announced he would leave the band.  Martin then assumed the songwriting duty and Alan Wilder joined the band as the replacement keyboardist after the recording of "A Broken Frame"

It is this line up that would carry Depeche Mode into its prime years (see discography)  In 1993 Alan left the band.  In 1995 David mad a suicide attempt by slashing his wrists and then nearly overdosed on heroin, leading to an arrest on drug charges.  However they were back on track with 1997's Ultra which went number 1 in the UK and entered the American album charts at #5.

In October 1998 Depeche Mode released "The Singles: 86-98" and went back on the road with a new tour to support the album
