Basic Muslim Transgender Terms:



                 
1. bissu (Bugis): Ritual intersex - role among the Muslim Bugis of Sulawesi

                 
2. calabai (Bugis): Bugis term for "male borns" who dress and feel feminine

                 
3. calalai (Bugis): Bugis term for "female borns" who dress and feel male

                 
4. hanisi (Ki-Swahili): East - African version of "khanith"

                 
5. hijra (Urdu): In India, Pakistan and Bangladesh this term encompasses "mukhannath"
                                           and "khuntha"; "third gender" role of the Indian Subcontinent

                 
6. intersexed, intersexual: Someone born with physical characteristics of both sexes

                 
7. khanith (Arabian): Folk - term for "mukhannath" and "khuntha"; meaning a third
                                                    gender role on the Southern Arabian peninsula ("male borns"
                                                     living a feminine life)

                 
8. khuntha (Arabian): intersexed human, hermaphrodite, sometimes used interchangeably
                                                      with "mukhannath"

                 
9. khusra (Punjabi): Punjabi word for "hijra", widely used in Pakistan

                 
10. k�cek (Turkish): "male born" in Ottoman times who danced in feminine ways,
                                                   wearing a feminine type of clothing, often a "muhannes"

                 
11. lubunya (Turkish slang): self designation of Istanbul`s male to female transgenders,
                                                               from Slavic
liubima ("darling", feminine)

                 
12. lubunyaca (Turkish slang): An argot used by the "lubunyalar" of Istanbul, combines
                                                                  Turkish, Slavic and Romani - Gypsy vocabulary on the   
                                                                   base of a largely Turkish grammar

                 
13. muhannes (Turkish): Turkish version of "mukhannath"

               
14. mukhannath (Arabian): "effeminate, not clearly male"; a "male born" feeling, behaving
                                                              and ususally also dressing like a female, connected to
                                                              "khuntha" , often used interchangeably with it; muslim
                                                              medieval equivalent to male to female transgenders

                 
15. (s.a.s.) (Arab): sallallahu alaihi wa salam - may God bestow peace and blessings upon
                                               him (the noble Prophet)


                 
16. third gender: A term used often in anthropology to describe gender roles in non
                                             european cultures which transgress the boundaries of male and female

                 
17. transgender: Someone whose existence transgresses the usual boundaries of "male"
                                            and "female" in modern western culture

                 
18. transsexual: Most well known transgender type, someone whose gender identity does
                                           not correspond to his/her biological sex, but fully corresponds to its
                                           opposit ("female trapped in a male body", vice versa)

                 
19. waria (Javanese): Traditional male to female "third gender role" in Javanese muslim
                                                    society

                 
20. xanith (Arabian): Alternative spelling of "khanith"

                
21. yan daudu (Hausa): A third gender role in the folk - islamic - african "bori" cult
                                                       in West Africa

                 
22. zenne (Turkish): A male born performing the role of a woman on stage or while
                                                   dancing; often, though not always, a "muhannes
