Seems that as part of the Bush administration's new nonsectarian sectarianism, the IRS has decided to begin taxing synagogues. They send a new kid, right out of school, to take on the first test case, figuring that a "newbie" hot dog will find something in the books if anyone could. Well, this kid pours over page after page of records and can't find a damn thing. Finally, he hits upon it. Surely the rabbi is taking full deductions for things that are reusable. The tax guy doesn't need paper documentation, he'll catch the rabbi in the interview. Well, the big day comes and after the usual amenities, the tax guy gets down to business. "Rabbi," he says, "I want you to tell me what you do with all the candle stubs you have left after services." "Well," says the rabbi, "we save them up and send them to the candle maker and every once in a while he sends us back a new candle." Copious notes in the tax guy's journal. "And what," the tax guy continues, "do you do with all the crumbs after religious meals?" "We collect them and send them to the baker and every once in a while he sends us back a matzo," the rabbi replies. More notes in the tax guy's journal. While these are being written, the rabbi figures out what all this is leading up to. "I think you forgot something," the rabbi says. "What's that?" inquires the auditor. "When we do circumcisions we save the foreskin, too. We send them to the IRS and every once in a while they send us back a little prick like you."
