I grew up in the tough French seaport of Marseilles, and let me tell you young man it was a tough place to live as a carefree young Englishmen. There weren't too many twelve year olds wearing safari suits in Marseilles in the 60's, let me tell you. Anyway, one day I stumbled upon a bear fight in an old disused warehouse and became hooked instantly - I could feel that there was an electricity in the air, a certain magic. From that moment I never looked back. Q You're a well travelled man, Roger. Where's the strangest place you've ever seen a gorilla fight? A Well, that would have to be on top of a cable car in the Swiss Alps whilst filming a Bond film. The apes were brought in as extras owing to an strike by the workers union, Equity and used to brawl freely. Cubby Broccoli loved this and decided to stage a fight between the two beasts at 20,000 feet up in the Alps. The funniest thing was that the fight was actually shown in the film - we took the precaution of dressing them up in dinner suits so we could use the footage. Marvellous. Q As the Greatest Living Englishman, Roger, who would you back in a gorilla v bear fight? A That's a very good question, and very well worded. I think that overall the bear would win out in any fight, and my reasoning is simple. The bear simply has too much firepower for the gorilla, I don't see any way that the gorilla could avoid a glancing blow from a claw, or a devastating hit with the full weight of the bear behind it. I must add that as an animal lover I am often asked as to how I reconcile this with my passion for blood sports, particularly bear and gorilla fighting. I find this is unfair. As we all know bears and gorillas are wild animals that love nothing more than a good scrap. Put starkly they are bloodthirsty beasts, and to deny them a fight is to deny them their very nature.
