,ndbB{k@b  1 daTextBoxHistory of Gorilla and Bear Fights Fighting Throughout the Ages - From Julius Cesar to Michael Winner There has long been a tradition of pitting bear versus bear, and gorilla versus gorilla, although it was not until the late twentieth century that man first dreamt of the possibility of gorillas fighting bears! Julius Caesar is the first figure in history to have a definite interest in gorilla fighting. Ancient manuscripts uncovered in Pompeii reveal that Caesar had scores of gorillas imported to his Roman palace, where he would pit gorilla v gorilla. The prized silverback fight was his favourite spectacle, which often offered up brutal fights of over seventeen hours. Like their human counterparts, the Gladiators, a particularly heroic gorilla could in fact win his freedom, whereupon he would be released into freedom to take his place in Roman society. There are instances where silverback gorillas rose to quite high levels in the Roman hierarchy, with one example of a silverback gorilla commanding Roman troops into battle. Whereas the Romans loved their gorilla fights, further eastwards the Chinese liked nothing better than to unwind over a good bear brawl. Most of us now associate the Ming dynasty with their fine quality tableware. However, the Chinese were pioneers in the world of bear fighting, introducing many interesting variations to the familiar one-on-one bear fight. Bears were frequently dressed in fine silk gowns, tag team style bouts were frequently arranged, and bears would enter the fighting arena to loud, pumping, Chinese panpipe music. Fast forward to the twentieth century and we see that many public figures have held an interest in gorilla and bear fights. Screen idol Marilyn Monroe organised bouts of both gorilla and bear fights for the Hollywood glitterati. It is rumoured that President of the USA John F. Kennedy attended several of these bouts, accompanied by his burly CIA minders. When the champion silverback had seen off all of his animal opponents, legend has it that blood-thirsty Kennedy sent in two of his guards to take on the beast in order to prolong the spectacle. They emerged twenty minutes later, bloodied but victorious. Boffin Stephen Hawkins, now famous for his voiceover work in British television commercials used to arrange and attend bear fights at Oxford University. It is thought that he introduced the novel idea of blindfolding the bears before the bout, which added an element of chance to the bouts. There are many examples of rock-stars being involved in bear fights, in fact there are too many to list here.
