Find out what footballs greatest ever manager has to say on the gorilla v bear fight scene Featured here for the first time since retiring from the world of football management we have managed to secure an interview with the legendary 'Big' Ron Atkinson. Described as a bear of a man in his playing days, at his peak Big Ron weighed in at over twenty-two stones of pure muscle and aggression. He is one of the biggest men to ever grace the game of football and his name is known throughout the civilised world. More recently he has carved out a role for himself in the competitive world of sports commentary, which makes him an ideal candidate to take on the role of commentating for the world's first ever televised gorilla v bear fight. Q So, Big Ron, how did you first become interested in gorilla v bear fights? A It all started when I was boss at Manchester United. I noticed a few of the lads were leaving training early doors, which worried me. Anyhow, I found out they were actually going to illegal bear fights underneath the Arndale Centre in Middleton. I had to follow my curiosity and have a look, and what do you know, I was hooked! Q How would you imagine a gorilla v bear fight turning out? A That's a good question. One thing's for certain - either side could win it, or it could be a draw. I think it would be a test, a real test of character for both the bear and the gorilla. I think at the end of the day it's going to be a street fight, a question of who wants it most - no doubt about that! What will prove critical for me is the hunger of the bear, his pure desire - that will prove to be the critical question. Q So you don't see any chance of success for the gorilla then? A No, not really. It would have to be a gorilla of real quality to overcome the bear, that's a fact. What I would call a 'world gorilla', one that could compete on the world stage. Spotters badge is definitely needed for the gorilla to be in with a chance. He would also need to be a 'street gorilla', by that I mean a gorilla who can get in behind the bear and use street tactics in order to upset him. Q What tactics do you see the bear using to win the contest? A Well, I think that the bear would really push up tight on the gorilla and use his height and strength, possibly giving it some lollipop as he gets stuck into the fight. The gorilla would stick it to the bear full gun early doors, but I think he'd get it right back down his throat. We all know the bear can be a bit of an amusement arcade at times, so he can't gamble all his eggs at once! The bear will bide his time, then eventually I can see him loading it into the mixer, full gun! Having said that, spotters badge to the gorilla, if he can get in at the second post early doors then I can see the bear going down like Buddy Holly! After all, the bear is a big fella, lightning slow at times, with the turning circle of the QE2, he may arrive at the fight in instalments! He'll have to be in the wide-awake club from the off, really pop one off at the gorilla and give it to him full gun. I just have a sneaking feeling that it's there to be won for the bear. At the end of the day he's got nothing to lose but the fight, if he grabs the gorilla by the horns then I can see him running out the winner. Q Do you see any potential pitfalls for the bear? A Certainly. The gorilla can really throw everything into the mixer, he may even have a few extra gears in the locker on the day itself. The gorilla is also spiteful, in the nicest sense of the word, and that could be a factor. If I were coaching any gorilla, I would just tell him to go to the sound of the trumpets early doors and try to stick a couple of reducers on the bear. That way he could be in with a chance. Having said that, I've always said that the bear has a great chance of victory, and there's nothing I've seen of any of the current day gorillas that would make me change my mind. There was one gorilla I saw in the 70's that would have caused a stir though, even for the biggest of bears. Tell you what, I've seen a lot of good gorillas in my time, but he might just have been the greatest gorilla in the history of the world ever! Q Finally, Ron, you've been described as a big bear of a man yourself. Would you ever wrestle a gorilla? A No chance!
