The mighty bear. Loved by all, feared by many.
The mighty bear stands at over eight feet tall and weighs in at over thirty stones. He is a formidable beast and will not back down from any fight.
In nature he will hunt or fight any animal. Driven out of Africa after several high profile incidents with the endangered big cats he now can be found chiefly in North America and certain regions of Asia.
Their population is unknown, but is thought to top one billion worldwide, of which grizzly bears make up around 90%.
The grizzly bear's chief strengths are twofold; first and foremost he can rely on his great height and strength to subdue any opponent. He may choose to do this in any one of a number of ways - he could swat you like a fly, sit on you and crush you to death, or he could simply tear you limb from limb; secondly he has several razor sharp claws on each one of his giant claws with which he can deliver a killer blow. He can strip the flesh from a fully-grown horse in less than two minutes flat.
The bear also has a number of other key attributes that make him a formidable opponent indeed. He can run at considerable speed, often reaching up to fifty miles per hour at full sprint, and can also climb trees with immeasurable ease. He also has a very keen sense of smell and a voracious appetite.
However, the grizzly bear does have a number of key weaknesses that may prove decisive in any fight with a gorilla. Although his size is an asset, it could work against him in a fight lasting over one hour as his stamina is unproven. In the past, bear handlers have fed their fighting bears on vitamins and isotonic sports drinks in order to combat this, with varying results.
The average bear also has a distinct weakness for honey of all varieties and will go to any lengths for a 'fix' of the sweet substance. A cunning gorilla may choose to use this fact to his advantage.
Finally, bears are not renowned for their intelligence. Indeed, there is no recorded instance of any bear playing and beating a human being at chess, or even draughts or noughts and crosses.

The mighty gorilla - could he be the true King of the Jungle?
The gorilla is a formidable beast, an intoxifying blend of brains and brawn. He stands at over seven feet tall, although often chooses to squat down on his haunches, ready to pounce. The leader of gorillas, the fearsome silverback, is usually even bigger and more powerful than a normal gorilla.
In the natural world he has no natural predators and so struts through the jungle without a care in the world. He can hunt as well as fish, although he often chooses to 'go veggie' and tuck into a few bananas, or even just a few lettuce leaves depending on his mood.
Although not as tall as a fully-grown bear, the gorilla does have several large, razor sharp fangs with which he can puncture flesh easily. He is also able to generate large amounts of power via his densely packed muscles that lurk beneath his thick, black fur.
The gorilla is also an expert climber. Who amongst us can forget the Hollywood classic, 'King Kong', where the biggest ape of all climbed the biggest building of all, the Empire State Building! From a lofty vantage point such as this he may choose to hurl missiles, such as coconuts, at the unwitting grizzly bear.
Perhaps the biggest advantage the gorilla possesses is his superior intellect. A gorilla in many ways is like a big, hairy human being, although of course they cannot talk. Gorillas in captivity have been trained to perform a variety of tasks, including peeling potatoes, operating fork lift trucks and packing shopping in supermarkets. Thus, armed with this intellect and his superb dexterity, a gorilla could use any one of a number of situations to his advantage, for example he may be able to fashion a crude weapon from some old bark and twigs.
It is difficult to find any weaknesses in the gorilla's psychological make up. Where he loses out is in the physical stakes, giving away several stones to the average grizzly bear, although we must of course bear in mind the gorilla's superior reach.
