Many of the covered bridges of Vermont and New Hampshire are or have been destroyed by vandalism or by floods. There are only a hand full of original bridges remaining. The majority of the remaining bridges are being restored by local citizens or historical societies.
Covered bridges served as connectors between families, towns, and communities. Historically, the bridges connected lives, while their structure became artwork and beauty. The history of each bridge and structure has stood the test of time. Each bridge offered a unique experience. All the bridges I photographed I either walked or rode my motorcycle across. Some of the bridges were off the beaten path, while some are still used today. Each bridge communicated something about its existence and how it connected one side to the other... creating one. Crossing and being in the presence of each bridge was an experience I will never forget. I hope to return to NH one day to complete my documentation of all the covered bridges that are still standing.
Fifty-Six Bridges are listed on the "New Hampshire Covered Bridges Map", published by Hartnett House Map Publishers. I documented 36 out of 56. All bridges were photograhed using both digital and 35 mm cameras. |
