Day 1: July 4, 2003
Fuquay-Varina, NC to Winchester, VA
Solo Ride 294.7 Miles
journal entry - day 1
Day 1:
I got a late start and had to stop several times to adjust things on my bike.  The ride was good, but hot.  I ran into a heavy thunderstorm outside of Charlottesville, VA and had to pull over to wait for the rain to stop.  Once the rain cleared I drove to Winchester, VA where I checked into the Travel Lodge around 7:00 PM.

While unpacking my bike I met two other bikers, Mark and Lynn.  Lynn is a member of the Iron Butt Club and rides a BMW.  Mark rides a Gold Wing and has traveled as far as Alaska on his bike. Both are long time riders and met while touring New Zealand on their motorcycles.  I thought that would be a great thing to plan one day.  Lynn's goal is to still be riding her motorcycle when she is in her 80's.

We walked over to the Texas Steak House and had supper together and discussed motorcycle experiences.  Lynn and Mark were on their way to the BMW Rally in West Virginia.  The next morning we discussed my motorcycle route to see how I could save some time and miles.  Since Lynn is originally from NYC and Mark is from Burlington, VT they knew all the roads well.  We finished our breakfast at IHOP and said our goodbyes and headed our separate ways.
