| August 30, 2004 << previous next>> August 2: Monday, the next day after everyone returned to Kyiv. I was out at the Irish Pub with some friends, saw a couple of English guys I had met a few months back, went to talk to them, two very attractive women were in the adjoining booth, a few smiles and a double-take later and I was sharing margaritas and off to a disco. The whole next week was spent with my pseudo new girlfriend Lena, and then August 11: Crimea. Two weeks on the coast teaching English at a language camp in Sudak, a major beach town and famous for its Tatar population and its Genoese fortress, known as the Krepost, in the mountains lining the beach. The Good: working with young kids again and enjoying their energy and excitement at learning English; seeing a bunch of Peace Corps friends I hadnt seen in awhile; the schwarmas (Middle Eastern chicken wraps) and lagman (Tatar noodle soup) I ate almost daily; the last three days of lying out on the beach and soaking up the final sun of the summer. The Bad: my friends toilet which quit working after the second day; the sick stomach epidemic which hit everyone except me (and directly contributed to the first problem); the beach packed with Russian and Belarusian tourist whose lack of manners and decency is staggering; and a 17-year-old camper who fell in love with me and wouldnt leave me alone (her text messages are priceless). August 24: Back in Donetsk, just in time for the week-long Independence Day festival. There were huge parties and concerts in the square and drunk revelry everywhere. I met a famous soccer player from Cameroon and one of his friends whos a student here and had a fun time hanging out with them. The circle of friends widens a little larger. And thats about it. My first meeting with my department is Monday, August 30th, and then everything is back to normal. The theme of this semester is going to be Diligence. Im starting Russian lessons for the first time since I finished training and am determined to really get good. Ill head back to the gym this week and resume my workouts which ended before I left for Prague. Ill work on the screenplay I started and outlined this summer. Ill start teaching English again at a private school on Saturdays. And Ill start my secondary project, which is setting up an English club at my school. Phew, Im exhausted just recapping this past two months. I need to rest. Tomorrows an early day. |
