HulWiz

Beta 1.5

What's New In HulWiz 1.5?

Several things, several bug fixes, and more are planned for later. To make things easier, I've replicated the "selection" table below, to define things by category. In addition, I've spun out a few more estimated figures from various Rules Of Thumb (ROT), which display on the "calculating...done" page.

You may well believe that this whole thing is a bunch of ROT, but I couldn't possibly comment.

There is also a Frequently Asked Questions page.

General Enter desired boat length in feet: No changes.
Enter desired boat displacement (loaded) in pounds: No changes.
Select sheerline No changes.
Side flare: No changes.
Tumblehome? Added third choice, "hollow." This is basically reverse tumblehome, and shouldn't really be called tumblehome anymore, but hey - it fit well in the code.
Choose bottom profile heights: A new set of selections - an attempt to handle a very complex area which was also far and away The Number One Most Requested Additional Capability. Basically, it controls the keel shape and with it the general fore-and-aft curve of the hull bottom. I think it should be possible to do a wide variety of shapes - planing, deep-vee, displacement, cobles, barges - but in order to allow this it become a little, well, complex. Note that here, keel means the "real" keelline of the hull, and not necessarily the bottommost chine which HULLS also calls the keel. But I digress.

The table lets you pick a height (in general terms - the code will scale it to the overall size of the hull, like all other features) for the bottom at each of the five stations. Stem and stern have the most choices; it is recommended that you leave stations 2 and 4 "generated" unless you have a specific reason for varying them. The defaults will give the same curve as HulWiz 1.0 produced, in case you like it.

Bow Form Select bow section shape A fourth section shape was added, "wineglass." Actually, this is a misnomer and I intend to change the name as soon as I can figure out what to call the **** thing. If you select this, and also select tumblehome, you get a hard-chine approximation of a wineglass section. Try it. Probably there's something even cleverer you can do with it, but usually I don't find out unless some nice user tells me about it.
Select bow width This was previously known as "bow type." In HulWiz 1.0, the 'pram' choice was narrow and raised. In 1.5 this controls only the width (narrow), and the means of raising the bottom to 'pram height' was transferred to the new 'bottom profile heights' above.

This also means you can do a wide, raised hull of any provided section shape, or uncountably many combinations of bottom height, bow width, and section shape. Well, ok, actually there are 48 combos. I think.
