9xxxx Other Cargos

90900 Salvage This cargo consists of machinery or equipment in various states of disrepair returned from a site of abandonment. Salvage from an abandoned spacecraft may be in quite good repair, salvage from a long underwater wreck may be corroded and covered in sea life. The source of salvage is generally the company or organization that has recovered it. It may be shipped to specialized reclamation companies, or companies dealing in used equipment if still in good repair, or groups looking to cannibalize the salvage for spare parts. Note that if salvaged goods consist of undamaged cargo of another type, it should be considered to be of that type. Occasionally, salvage may be material beyond use or repair, but some organization will want it transported for some other purpose; historical or scientific.

Base Unit: Pallet. 5 tons per Pallet.

Typical Quarterly Market: Whatever the salvagers found.

Market Volatility: Extremely high

Typical Quarterly Source: Too variable to predict. Depends on what the salvagers have recovered. Could be a single pallet, could be a dozen containers worth..

Source Volatility: Extremely High

91000 General Parcels General Parcels are the every day packages sent by individuals and businesses to other individuals and businesses, too small to be shipped individually. They may be documents, gifts, proposals, records, "care packages" whatever- the shipper usually doesn't get to know, anyway. Parcels are gathered together and put into a common pallet for shipping to the destination world. There are several different policies out there pertaining to parcels, and players may not always be able to move them. Some governments insist that only special government courier ships carry the general parcel trade. Others grant a civilian company a charter to carry the parcels along a certain route- this may be hotly contested, and the government will look at cost, speed and reliability a the key factors in granting a charter. Some locales will send their parcels on "next available ship", as long as it meets speed and reliability criteria, and agrees to the standard rate structure for that route. Finally, some routes are covered by multiple competing parcel carriers. Unlike any other cargo, Parcel markets are figured per month.

When competing for a contract as a regular parcel carrier, be sure to add the average wait time, (1/2 time between trips) to the transport time to arrive at total speed! Thus, a ship leaving every 20 days and having a journey time of 10 days will have a total time of 20 days. A cargo line leaving every 10 days and having a journey time of 14 days will have a total time of 19 days, and if cost is roughly the same, will win the contract.

Base Unit: Pallet, .5 tons.

Typical Monthly Market: There is none. The Destination accepts all the parcels sent to it from the Source.

Market Volatility: N/A

Typical Monthly Source: The Monthly Parcel Delivery Base uses a table all its own to figure how many pallets of parcels are going where. Do not use the Market Base of the planet where the ship is currently. Rather, use the Base of the intended destination. Modify according to the relations table, and according to the distance table. More parcels will be sent to closer points than further ones, and more to socially affiliated one than foreign ones. Note that the distance table is in terms of days of travel. This refers to the "typical" days of travel between the parcel origination and the source. Note that the existence of a player-operated ship in the game can effect what is typical. If the players' ship is the only one on that route, its travel time is typical.

Source Volatility: Moderate

91100 Secured Valuables This class includes personal or business documents, archives, cash, private heirloom possessions, or other such items of extreme value necessitating special care and security. This will not be a speculative cargo for obvious reasons, and is generally transported in heavily armored and secure containers. The owner will be looking for a ship with a very good reputation, and speed, security, and insurance coverage. As in many high value cargo types, the owner will often demand a "chain of custody", that is, the shipper has them under personal care until delivered. The quantity is typically small and will be transported in document cases, 40 of which fit onto a standard pallet. Traders will often keep them in a ship's vault, or among personal possessions, or in another special place. Note that source volatility is extremely high- a major financial institution might be moving its vaults, or a single case may be shipped by a law firm or government agency

Base Unit: Case .025 tons

Typical Annual Market: Whatever the shipper is sending.

Market Volatility: Extremely High

Typical Annual Source: Nothing is typical- anything from a single case to 20 or so pallets is possible.

Source Volatility: Extremely High

92000 Private Household Goods This represents private property being shipped, often in conjunction with the relocation and resettlement of the owner (who may or may not also be travelling as a passenger) . As such it is never a speculative cargo. The trader will simply be hired to move it from place to place. Individuals rarely contact ships directly. These shipments are generally arranged through transport services, freight forwarders, agencies, and organizations.

Base Unit: Pallet. 1 ton per Pallet.

Typical Quarterly Market: Whatever is being shipped.

Market Volatility: Extremely high

Typical Quarterly Source: Too variable to predict. Could be a pallet or two, or a large colonization effort may be underway with manyl containers to be moved

Source Volatility: Extremely High

Special Instructions: Often Packed By Amateurs. Check packaging, just to be sure.

93100 Diplomatic Cargo The Diplomatic Pouch, when not moved on a government courier, is shipped on the most trusted of shippers, whenever possible on one having registration in the nation to which the diplomatic pouch belongs. The pouch consists of documents and belongings being shipped from one diplomatic post to another. It is usually off limits to searches and inspections, and is sealed with an official closure of some sort that is difficult to open. Sometimes, a government agent will accompany the pouch, usually openly as a courier. An independent shipper will only be approached if reliability is beyond doubt, loyalty is assured, (or can be assured through placement of an agent) and need is great. The Diplomatic Pouch will always travel from one diplomatic facility to another. A trader who has a reputation as reliable for this job will often be called upon in the future. Handling of diplomatic cargo can often put the trader in touch with people who will offer interesting, uh, side jobs. The quantity is often small and will be 50% of the time, transported in 1-10 document cases, 40 of which fit onto a standard pallet. Traders will often keep these in a ship's vault, or among personal possessions, or in another special place. The rest of the time, the Pouch will consist of 1 pallet (40%) 1d10 pallets (9%) or a full container (1%). Generally, when an unusually large diplomatic cargo is being moved, it is considered very bad form to discuss it.

Base Unit: Case .025 tons, Pallet 1 ton or Container 24 tons

93200 Museum Artifacts On rare occasion, a museum will see fit to loan an exhibit to another museum, or send it permanently, or send it on a "tour" of several museums. Or, a collector in the field will assemble artifacts for delivery to a museum. Under these circumstances, the museum will contract with a trader to move the cargo. It is available as speculations cargo only under the most bizarre of circumstances- but it has happened. When shipping, the museums usually pay well, but they are notoriously fussy about the ships they choose. The ship must have an excellent reputation, good security and safety, and insurance. Originator of the cargo will generally be a museum or similar institution, or it may be a private collector or field team of a museum or foundation. Destination will be a museum, or sometimes another facility being used for a temporary exhibit.

Base Unit: Pallet (1 ton) or Container (24 ton) Much of the weight is protective packaging.

Typical Annual Market: The Market is whatever is being shipped.

Market Volatility: High

Typical Annual Source: Sources will be rare, but when they exist, not relevant to size of market. Typically, a shipment of artifacts to a museum or lab from a field site or a transshipment between museums will be 1 (50%) or 1-10 (50%) pallets, and a travelling exhibition will be 1-10 pallets (75%) or 1-4 containers (25%)

Source Volatility: Extremely High

97100 Pentapod Bioengineered Devices This covers the range of non-medical tools and gadgets the Pentapods supply to humans. Pentapod devices tend not to be of the broad machinery or weapon category, nor are they electronic in nature. Rather, a pentapod device is a living organism, usually designed to perform a very specialized function. Pentapods have a habit of inventing "singer system" devices rather than equipment that is an amalgamation of systems. Hence, you can get a Pentapod air filter, or warning siren that will alert you to a specific condition- toxins in the air, for example- but not a vehicle or wide ranging sensor suite. With Pentapod products, there seems to be no regular, predictable pattern to product distribution. They sell what they want, when they want. There are two ways of acquiring Pentapod products. One is by making contact with the Pentapod equivalent of a trader. The other is by acquiring them from a dealer who has contacts with a Pentapod trader. Buyers are Retailers or certain organizations.

Base Unit: Pallet, 1 tons. 25% of pallets will be triple size units of 3 tons.

Typical Annual Market: Base x (MED%) x Wealth Mod x 2 x 2 Pallet.

Market Volatility: High

Typical Annual Source: Special, Delivered from Pentapod space.

Source Volatility: Very High

97120 Pentapod Medical Devices As with other Pentapod products, there seems to be no regular, predictable pattern to product distribution. They sell what they want, when they want. There are two ways of acquiring Pentapod products. One is by making contact with the Pentapod equivalent of a trader. The other is by acquiring them from a dealer who has contacts with a Pentapod trader. Medical devices, however, are a bit tighter controlled due to human skepticism. Pentapod medical systems are more advanced than the equipment humans have, and as a result of several agreements between Pentapods and human governments, these systems are sold only through special exchange posts set up for the purpose. Demand is at any organization that buys major medical equipment.

97340 Eber Artifacts- Ebers provide the equivalent to Textiles 65110, Handicrafts 89910, and Clothing (84xxx). Since these are of technology that is understood by humans and differ only in matters of style, they are not assigned unique codes. There are a handful of artifacts of unique Eber origin exported to humans, mostly ceremonial devices, tools, and things relevant to Eber culture that have no human equivalent. These are bought for their collector's and novelty value, and are assigned this code. Trade with Ebers is still at an early state, and more Eber items may be added in the future. Sellers are the Ebers themselves, and the very few traders authorized by several governments to have official trade contacts with the Ebers

Base Unit: Pallet, 1 tons.

Typical Annual Market: Base-10 x (wealth mod x 3) x 4 pallets

Market Volatility: High

Typical Annual Source: Highly variable, should be set by game master.

97341 Eber Herbs- Spices, herbs, and flavorings peculiar to the Ebers. Although these generate a lot of interest, shippers should be aware that many of the interactions between human biology and Eber herbs are unknown. Ebers often select herbs based on mild psycho-ractive properties, just like humans have with things like chocolate and coffee. As a result, these cargos are often restricted by governments unwilling to let alien drugs run amok.
