Ensign Guzman was reprimanded for failing to obey a direct order. She
was ordered to perform a telepathic scan on a victim of an assault to help
identify the attacker. The victim was in a coma. Anya refused to do the
scan.
She felt a person in a coma could not give consent to a telepathic scan.
Security wanted her to perform the scan anyway as they wanted to prevent
anyone else from being hurt. Anya still refused.

5: Yam and Amme take shore leave one day and never return. They sell
classified information to enemies of the Federation for a considerable
profit.
6: Anya's biological parents are arrested. Anya is sent to live in a
Federation Foster Home on Earth
6-16: Anya is adopted by her foster parents. Anya lived in the country
of El Salvador on Earth and completed elementary and secondary high school.

B. Background Summary:

Ensign Guzman was born on the USS FLONDIN under the name Anya
Diep. Her parents were serving as science officers aboard the FLONDIN. When
Anya was six, her parents went AWOL and betrayed the Federation by selling
classified information for a large profit. The information they sold ended
up in the hands of terrorists who destroyed the FLONDIN, killing any crew
unable to make it to the escape pods in time. Anya's parents were arrested,
tried and
convicted of treason. They money they had made illegally was given to the
families of the victims.
Anya was then placed in a foster home. Her foster parents
quickly became attached to her and adopted her later that same year. Anya
changed her name from Anya Diep to Anya Guzman.
Her adoptive parents were career Starfleet officers both of whom
rose through the ranks all the way to Admiral. When they retired, they
married and became foster parents to many children, from many different
worlds. As a result, Anya grew up with a great deal of children from a
variety of cultural backgrounds. This enabled Anya to develop a knowledge
and understanding of many cultures. While the Guzmans had many foster
children stay with them temporarily, they only
adopted two children, Anya and her older brother Alexander.
Alexander is a member of the deaf community. Anya learned ASL to
facilitate communicating with her brother. She found she enjoyed learning
another language and began to learn other languages as a hobby.
Anya learned from her adoptive parents what Starfleet and the
Federation stood for. Anya developed a deep desire to join Starfleet but
she also knew that it would be difficult considering her heritage. Her
adoptive parents encouraged Anya to follow her dream of being a Starfleet
officer.
While Anya was living in El Salvador, she began studying the
bible and converted to the Roman Catholic faith through the Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.)
Also, her Haliian telepathic abilities began to develop while she
was in El Salvador. She discovered that her telepathic abilities were based
on touch like many Haliians. However her telepathic abilities were much
stronger than that of a Haliian, likely due to her Betazoid half. She began
wearing gloves to limit the possibility of accidentally reading anyone
else's thoughts or sending her own thoughts to anyone else. She only uses
her telepathy with
the consent of the person she is using her telepathy on.
At age 16, Anya applied to Starfleet. She had met all the
requirements for admission and scored one of the highest marks on the
entrance exams.
However, Starfleet officials were very hesitant to allow her entrance into
the Fleet. They brought up the fact that her birth parents are known
traitors. Anya insisted that she is very loyal to Starfleet, the Federation,
and the ideals and principles upon which both of which were founded. Anya
also pointed out that she has had no contact with her biological parents
since their arrest and she has no desire to have any contact with them. She
considers Heidi and Vincente Guzman to be her parents now. Anya even
agreed to undergo Betaziod telepathic scans, Vulcan mind melds, etc to prove
her loyalty. It was determined that under Starfleet regulations, all
applicants must be treated equally. Anya was admitted to Starfleet and was
later given permission to wear gloves with her uniform.
At age 20, Anya graduated the academy. She majored in Psychology
and Diplomacy making her an excellent candidate for a ship's/station's
counsellor. She took a minor in Engineering and would make an adequate
engineer.
At 21, Anya graduated from Star Fleet Postgraduate School.

VII. Psychological Profile

"Anya is a dedicated Starfleet officer. She did well at the academy. She
took a heavy course load, was a member of a string quartet, belonged to a
club and still managed to maintain a high academic record.
Her biggest problem at the academy was socially. While she had
many friends, she also those she did not get along with. There was a
student who had family on the FLONDIN. He blamed Anya for their deaths and
convinced other cadets that Ensign Guzman had no place in Starfleet. These
cadets took it upon themselves to torment and harass her. Her reaction to
these students was commendable. She did not respond in kind, but simply
ignored several pranks and insults. By the end of her time at the academy,
she had even counselled and befriended some of those who had been bullying
her.
However, she could not change the minds of all of the bullies.
At an Academy party celebrating the end of exams, she was approached by
four cadets. The cadets asked her to take a walk with them, claiming they
wanted to apologize for the way they had treated her. Anya went with them.
The cadets took her to a secluded area and beat her quite badly. She
managed to defend herself quite well at first but there were four of them.
Anya spent two weeks
in sickbay, another two weeks as a witness at the court-martial and missed
her actual graduation ceremony. She said she did not mind. She claimed she
was just glad she got promoted to the rank of Ensign and was on her way to
CNS, USS LEVIATHAN training. I suspected it upset her more than she admits.
Anya is a kind, compassionate and accepting person with an
ability to be very diplomatic. I believe she will make an excellent
counsellor aboard a starship some day. I will miss the time she spent
volunteering in this office as an assistant Counselor."

I was among those who could not see past the fact that she is the daughter
of convicted criminals. But once I got to know her, I changed my mind.

hard-working and very eager-to-please. I believe she would make a fine
addition to any ship in the fleet."

would give her the opportunity to interact with others. When she does spend
