VI. Background Summary

======================

Dr Madison (Mel) Carnegan began her employment as a civilian doctor before joining Star Fleet Officer Candidate School training in the spring of 2411, at the age of 37.

Her previous experience had been as a volunteer crew member and attending Doctor aboard the humanitarian vessel RED CRESCENT under retired ex-Star Fleet Captain James Wackrow.  The RED CRESCENT was a mercy ship, carrying food, water and providing emergency medical aid to both sides of the conflict.  It was Captain Wackrow who first convinced Mel to apply for Star Fleet Officer Training after two years of service aboard the RED CRESCENT.  Captain Wackrow’s personal recommendation saw Mel invited to attend officer training, even after the initial dead line for applications had closed.  His original letter of testimonial is included within this bio-data.

Mel had originally begun her medical career with the Clinical Genetics Unit as a Counselor, after completing his Residency training at Calgary Regional Hospital. Her particular research interest had been the manipulation and molecular degradation of the DNA of hybrid species and she found herself working as a Counselor for cross species descendants for 18 months before discovering trauma medicine.

The decision to change from Genetics Counselor to Trauma Surgeon had been made after she was involved in an emergency medical situation aboard the passenger ship BAI GAN.  Mel had been returning from a Genetics Conference on Betazoid when the ship had been forced to take an alternative route and had hit an abandoned Klingon mine.  With most services off-line, Mel had worked with very little medical resources to save most of the injured passengers on board.  Miraculously, she only lost 3 patients out of the 24 lives she had saved, before the ship was reached by a freighter that had transported the survivors to the nearest Star Base.

After returning to the University of Calgary she applied for a transfer between the Clinical Genetics Unit and the Emergency Department of Calgary Regional Hospital.  Given the shortage of trauma surgeons her transfer had taken place a little after three weeks from her application.  To begin with Mel thrived in the environment of trauma surgery and the constant pressure that life and death situations bring out in people.  She soon found herself taking on a senior role within the Emergency Department, both with staff and in allocating resources, and after a year found herself promoted to the Head of Department (the youngest of any of the HoD’s at 32 years old).

Mel worked for a further 2.5 years as HoD, gaining a reputation for high standards, resourcefulness and hugely respected by both her staff and hospital management.  However, she soon found the administrative responsibilities of running a Department difficult to balance with her work as a Trauma Surgeon.  By the end of May 2426, she had decided to resign from Calgary Regional Hospital and take up a voluntary position working as an Attending Doctor and was shortly later offered a place on the RED CRESCENT.

Mel was the youngest of three children and the only girl of Dr Andrew Carnegan, a highly respected cardiac surgeon and the late Dr Margaret Laurel, who had been a very successful gynecologist until her untimely death in June 2387, when Mel was 13.  Following her mothers death her father had enrolled Mel at Forest Lakes Secondary School, a private boarding school just south of Rio de Janeiro.

After graduating from secondary school as a 1st class honors grad student, Mel enrolled in a Bachelors degree of Biological Sciences at the University of California Berkley; while moving back to her childhood home in the affluent Hunter Valley region of California.  However, she found the demands placed on her by her father and older brothers difficult to counter and after only a year applied to the University of Calgary Medical Faculty.  There she completed both her Doctor of Medical Sciences and Diploma in Cellular Genetics.

VII. Psychological Profile

==========================

Dr Carnegan has a naturally high level of dedication and commitment to any role that she takes on.  She has a demonstrated leadership nature highlighted by the period of working as Head of the Emergency Department, at the Calgary Regional Hospital and with other cadets on the training programme.  She thrives under pressure, particularly if others are dependent or reliant on her or her decisions.  She is naturally resourceful and excels in any situation where quick thought or immediate action is required.  She is fiercely loyal to her colleagues and friends and has a strong sense of comradeship.

However, Dr Carnegan does place a high level of importance on her current role and criticism of her work can leave her susceptible to the adverse effects of stress and highly emotive.  Her need to feel worthwhile no doubt arises from her estranged relationship with her family, particularly her father.  As the youngest of the family with very successful brothers in the field of medicine, Dr Carnegan has always felt the need to prove her abilities and independence.  The relationship with her family has also caused her to rely on friends and work to replace the emotional needs of family.

VIII. Reports & Recommendations

===============================

Physical Report

===============

Candidate:  Dr Madison (Mel) Carnegan

Blood Pressure:  120/80

Physical Ailments:  None

Grade:  Pass

Comments:

Dr Madison Carnegan receives a pass mark in physical fitness.  This mark is due mainly to the lack of cardio-vascular preparation that Dr Carnegan had undertaken before the physical training section of the school had begun.  Her grade could be considerably higher with further physical training, as her body has the ability to be strengthened further.

Dr Carnegan has an exceptionally high level of flexibility and can bring her heartbeat under control in less than 2 minutes, a by-product of her interest in the eastern philosophies of tai chi and yoga.  I have encouraged Dr Carnegan to look at several physical fitness routines that can encompass her interest in tai chi and flexibility while her increasing her overall aerobic base.

Letter of Recommendation

========================

I am writing with regard to the application of Dr Madison Carnegan (Mel) to Star Fleet Officer Candidate School.

During the past two years I have had the pleasure and honor of Dr Carnegan serving as the Attending Doctor aboard the “Red Crescent”.  During this time Dr Carnegan has been responsible for the medical welfare of staff and crew aboard this vessel, as well as the administration of immediate medical care and follow-up to the community that we are here to assist.

During Dr Carnegan’s time of service aboard RED CRESCENT we have been predominately situated in the Remloor system, offering aid to the many warring infractions of this part of the galaxy.  While often challenged with threats to her own personal safety Dr Carnegan never wavered in her duty as a sworn medical officer to provide aid where it was required.

Dr Carnegan has the admiration of the entire crew and the unwavering support of a small number of medical staff assigned to assist her.  She has demonstrated a reliable and responsible nature with a maturity far beyond her 33 years.

In closing, I would like to recommend that Dr Carnegan is invited to attend Officer Training this following Spring.  I understand that applications have already closed for this intake but it is my personal recommendation that Star Fleet cannot afford to loose a doctor or person of Dr Carnegan’s character, expertise and skill.
