Inline 6 TECH PAGE:
Engine Performance Tech Page
The problem...  The inline sixes just can't breathe!  I found that with a set of headers and a carburator you get UNBELIEVABLE sound and a good increase in torque and horsepower - however, without a good breathing treatment, you can only get maybe about 30% of your potential (since no air is getting to those headers and carb.).   By doing some basic head upgrades you can get 30-40 horsepower (+ the remaining 70% of your previously inaccessable potential from your headers and carb.).  This upgrade includes:  Larger valves - and a 1.75 intake valve to let the juices flow to your carburator,  Hardened seats - for unleaded fuel, unlock the valves, and bore the block .060 over, and deck it .040.  What you must remember on this part is that choosing how much you will mill off determines how high your compression goes which determines what you will have to use to run the car (93 octane, octane boosters, alcohol injection, or rocket fuel!).  Clifford allows that you can mill .060 off and still run straight 93 octane.  I will do .040 over .020 on mine to be sure!  (There are other compression factors including dished or flat top pistons, etc.).  When you do all the preceding upgrades, you will end up needing to  rebuild the front end - otherwise, you run the risk of having having to start all over again!  Further upgrades could include: straighten and turn the crank, new cam bearings, new rod bolts, pistons, and double valve springs, hardened locks and keepers, rocker arms, and {the reason for all the proceeding...} Cam and lifters.  (Many people build cams that will fit these cars, go with a hydraulic and then decide what you want out of the cam {top end or bottom} to decide on a duration.  Check isky, comp, clifford, etc.
MAINTAINANCE/PERFORMANCE TIPS:
**Stock TIMING is set at 6*, try playing with it to see what runs best for you, the more you do, the more you can raise the timing for greater performance.  You can run up to 12* but every car is different (2 cars with the same upgrades may run best on different timing settings, you just have to play with it) - start working about 7* - 10*.
**To increase your oil capacity (with out putting on a high output pan) you can use any of the following filters to increase from 4.5 quart capacity to 5:
        a.) AC PF42
 b.) Fram PH977A
 c.) Wix 51773
 d.) Purolater R17
