18. Robert Price Gray

Biographical Sketch p. 896:
Robert P. Gray, one of Clark County's oldest citizens, was born in Kentucky in 1823, and is the son of William Gray, a native of the same State, born in 1799, and Margaret (Price) Gray, who was also a native of Kentucky. Our subject was left an orphan at the early age of four, and in 1827 came to Missouri with his grandfather and uncle, making his home with them in Montgomery County, until 1837, when he accompanied his uncle to Lewis County, MO., (now Clark County,) and located at Athens. The country then abounded in wild deer and Indians, and the old gentleman can relate many stories of early pioneer life in Clark County. In 1853 our subject was united in marriage to Julia A. Graham, daughter of James R. and Malena B. (Davis) Graham, natives of Virginia and Kentucky respectively, and members of the Old School Presbyterian Church. The father was an old settler of Clark County. Mrs. Gray was born June 16, 1836 in Lewis County, MO. She received her education in Clark County, and is a bright and well-informed lady. This marriage was blessed with ten daughters, seven of whom are still living. Mr. Gray is the owner of 320 acres of good and well-improved land, and has been a farmer of Clark County for fifty years. He is a Democrat. His wife is a worthy member of the Old School Presbyterian Church. They are both greatly interested in the education of the future generation.

19. Mary "Polly" Finley Gray

Obituary:
Died, June 24th, 1893 Mrs. Francis B. Clare, aged 69 years and seven days. The subject of this notice was born in Kentucky June 17, 1824; her maiden name was Miss Mary Gray. By the death of her parents she was made an orphan at the early age of three years, and was brought to this county and reared by her grandparents, thus having never been blessed with a mother's care or known a mother's love. Notwithstanding, all this was extended to her children throughout her entire life in all that the word "mother" implies. At the time of her death she was on a visit to her son-in-law, B. H. Wommack. She had for a number of years been afflicted with that dreadful disease, rheumatism, which she bore with that christian fortitude and resignation that few are able to command. The day before her death (Friday), although feeble, she seemed in her usual good spirits and toward evening was rather cheerful. The family all retired early and God in his mercy permitted her to pass her last night on earth in sweet sleep with the family who loved her as a mother should be loved. About a quarter to four o'clock Saturday morning she was taken with a pain in her stomach; some simple remedies were given which did not give any relief.
Those around her did all in their power to alleviate her sufferings, but it seemed that the dreaded malady defied all human ministrations. She told her daughter, who bent every energy to relieve her, that the pain had gone to her shoulder. The daughter coming from another room, where she had been for some remedy, was alarmed at her mother's looks and called to her husband and father to come quickly, that she believed her mother was dying; her son-in-law was the first to reach the bed; he raised her head, which had gotten off the pillow and his wife asked what he thought. He told them she was dying; she made two gasps and all was over. ... Word was immediately sent to all the children who were near enough, and those at quite a distance telegraphed to, and by Sunday morning all were present except one, Mrs. Ella Fentem, who lives in California.
She was buried Sunday evening about four o'clock at the family burying ground on the old Clare farm. ...

Francis Beatty Clare

Obituary from Silex Index newspaper:
Francis B. Clare, who died December 12, 1905 was born in Kentucky in February, 1816.... He was the son of Daniel and Jane Hansford Clare, who came to this county in 1826 and settled on the farm now owned by Robert Shocklee. His father was married twice, the second marriage being to Mrs. Frances Cox of Montgomery County, who up until the last 18 years lived on the old homestead and is well and favorably known to many Lincoln County people. Uncle Frank was the eldest child of 7 sons and 2 daughters by his father's 1st marriage and one son by his second marriage. All except Horatio, the youngest of a family of ten children, have preceded him to the grave.
He attained his education in the old country log school houses, sitting upon benches made of split white oak timber without backs.
In 1840, he married Miss Mary Grey, who died June 24, 1892. To this christian mother and father ten children were born, 9 now living--5 sons and 4 daughters.
Funeral services were conducted at Elm Grove church by Elder Wm. A Meloan of Montgomery City. All the children were present except Mrs. Ella Fenton of California. Neighbors and friends filled the large house to its full capacity, which attests the esteem in which he was held. He leaves a family of 9 children, 35 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. In 1838 he settled the place on which he died, having lived there 67 years. At the time he came to this county the population was thin. I have heard him say that on the road running from Troy to Millwood, a distance of 12 miles, there were only eight houses, that men would go 10 to 12 miles, to help a settler raise a house. Hospitality was unbounded, selfishness never practiced. The west prairie which today is dotted with splendid farm houses and fertile farms was thought unfit for agriculture and adapted only to grazing. He lived to see almost three generations pass away -- the men of his father's day, most all those of his day and many of the third generation. ...Honest and just, he never claimed to be perfect, though a man of exemplary habits, scarcely ever failing to see the faults of those most dear to him and was ever ready to cover them with the mantle of charity. He did his duty as a citizen, neighbor and father; man that he was, never fearing to do right. No one loved his church better than he, and up to within a few years of his death the weather was seldom too inclement for him to attend and contribute to the support of the church and the spread of the gospel through its ministry. After his mind began to fail, he expressed the desire, if consistent with God's will, to be called home....
