The Family of Mathew Rankin Smith and Esther Ann Carter
Mathew Rankin Smith was the son of Welch and Irish immigrants, William and Catherine Smith.  His date of birth is recorded as October 4, 1809 in Washington Co., Pennsylvania.  We know little about his family until his marriage to Esther Ann Carter in Muskingum Co., Ohio on May 24, 1832.  Esther was the youngest daughter of Isaac Powers Carter and his wife, Joanna Gay.  She was born in Northport, Maine on July 1, 1814.  Mathew and Esther's first son, Isaac, was born in Morgan Co., OH, in 1833, and we believe that soon after his birth, the family moved to Delaware County, Indiana.  My ancestor is their 6th child, George Washington Smith, born March 3, 1843.  In the spring of 1865, the family moved to Wisconsin and settled in an area near West Lima, in Richland County.  Esther Ann Smith died in June of that year.  Mathew then married a widow, Catherine Clark Booher, and they had six children.  Mathew died  in December, 1883, soon after he and Catherine moved to Franklin Co., Tennessee.  They are buried in the Smith Family plot in Winchester City Cemetery, TN.
