ジェネキー医師とDavidの対面の場面です。
After several hours, his approach pays off.
" Well, Mr.David, how are
you doing ?"
" O.K. I thought you were gonna be wearing a tie.
" You did,
huh? You thought I was a real doctor."
David meets him in the den.
"So,
how are you?"
" O.K."
" You look a little pale, you don’t get much sun
these days, huh?"
What do you think yourself doing
in the next few years ?"
" I would like to do ….I’d like to be a philosophy
professor."
" To get better, you gonna have to take some chances. Does it
make sense ?"
" Well, I don’t know when you mean “better”, you don’t
mean, like, better with the capital B… you just mean ”improved”,
right?
"Well,
moving towards where you want to go….
After a few minutes, we were asked to turn off the camera, his doctor
Janike began therapy, he hopes will help David get out of the bathroom
and on his way to Boston for treatments.
"
When we first started doing a story on David, we tried to be a fly on the wall. The more time we spent with them, we've actually become the
part of his therapy. He comes out for us, or help do things for us.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"
"From my observations, it’s been
a good thing. I suspect he’d get out
sooner, because you guys are involved."
David has continued to keep his video diary which shows his progress,
but also his ambivalence about sharing his journey to hell with strangers.
"You got the values as an oddity. How many freaks are there
around? That’s… That’s worth something."
"Isn’t there a risk that
we could end up exploiting him?"
"In my understanding of David and other
people who do this is that
they want other people to know what this is to
help get rid of some of the
stigma to see them as
a normal people apart form their terrible symptomsdisabling them.
" I could be a good
philosopher. I could make contribution to society
…, in a respectable
manner…….(crying)"
"I don't want to be the boy in the bathroom."
"How long could David end up with living in the bathroom?"
"Without treatment with us intervening, he'd live in the bathroom
rest of his life."
But there are signals of
hope.
"It's not easy for him to come out, but he's working at
it."
It's a new year.
(Davidのせりふ、あまりに聞き取れないので省略@)
And there are
signs that David is finally making real progress.
"It's not easy for him to come out but he is working at it and he
seems to determine to do it."
Not only is David's spending more time outside the
bathroom,
("You wanna go to the video store?")
he's acutually been outside
his house.
(David等のせりふ、あまりに聞き取れないので省略A)
He's also been out to restaurants,
the dentist, even a wedding.
Still anxiety limits, how far he can
go?
(Davidのせりふ、あまりに聞き取れないので省略B)
No matter how hard David tries, he can't shake the fear that he is contaminating
others. The truth is, until he's willing to face his fears at a place like
Dr. Janike's OCD institute, David may not able to lead a normal life.
