For me, writing is separated into two separate categories. The first category, which I am rather good at and often enjoy is factual writing, and the second is expository writing which I have neither enjoyed nor been very successful at in the past. The main reason that I chose expository writing as my English class, is that I realize that exposition is one of my weaknesses and something that I would like to, and need to, improve on.
In school, I have always been a math and science oriented student. These subjects come natural to me and I often enjoy them. I like how there is often a logical solution to the answers, and there is usually only one answer to a given question. In these classes there is always a clear objective to your work, such as trying to find and answer to an equation. For these reasons, when I must do a writing assignment, I like it to be something factual with a clear thesis that I must prove. I find papers such as research papers easy because I know what I must do from the start, and I can look for the facts I need and write. As a writer, I would consider factual writings of this nature as one of my strengths, although I do not particularly enjoy doing it.
English has never been one of my favorite subjects, particularly for the reasons previously stated. I do not do bad writing essays such as critical lenses where I must take facts from works of literature and use it to prove a thesis, as that kind of writing is somewhat similar to social studies work. It is the expository kind of writing that I am not very good at and do not enjoy. Such works as journal entries, sharing your feelings, writing about events that were important to you have never interested me nor have I been extremely successful with. I am not a person who is very open with my feelings and that has been evident in my writing. I realize that I will not be able to escape this writing for the rest of my life, and that my exposition skills are something that I will eventually need to improve. This is the main reason I took expository writing this semester. I hope that I will get better at it, learn some new writing techniques, and hopefully I will learn to enjoy it as much as I can.
I am coming into expository writing not for the purpose of enjoyment, but to try to improve a skill that need work on. While exposition might not be one of my greatest assets as a writer I hope to make it one by the end of the semester, or at least be headed in that direction. I truly hope I will be pleased I took this course at the end of the year.
