The following is a rant I left on a message board a few days ago in the middle of the night. I decided I'd upload it here as another article because I had nothing better to do. Enjoy.
I personally think that the entire concept of profanity is completely stupid and that everyone should stop making a big deal out of it. If you handed me a movie of a guy saying "FUCK FUCK FUCK!" over and over again for ninety minutes for rating, I'd slap a G on it and put it on the shelves.
Violence? Violence is cool, and I don't think most people are stupid enough to think that what they see in violent movies should be reenacted in real life. I believe (based on pure uneducated speculation because I'm lazy,) that most acts of violence are probably going to happen whether or not you let a kid watch violent movies or play violent video games. In fact, for the video game thing, violent video games are actually probably a great way to relieve stress and decrease violent tendancies.
Nudity? Doesn't seem like it should be that big of a deal. The human body is disgusting, but most people seem to think it's some sort of work of art, so why not be allowed to show it off?
Nudity is different from sexual themes, mind you. If you don't want their kids going out and fucking everyone on two legs (and you think preventing them from seeing sex on T.V. will help,) then by all means, rate it R.
And gore? Jesus. You're right; the whole rating system is fucked up, but more extemely than you're claiming. There should be all kinds of ratings for different things, like "G" for "Gory" so squeamish viewers will know to avoid it. If you don't give a shit about seeing someone strangled to death with their own intestines, though, then you should be allowed to see the movie anyway. It should be up to the people. Why do the critics and rating systems get to decide how capable we are of watching movies?
Also, the whole age thing is an inaccurate science. I'll admit, it's easy and effective for the amount of effort they're willing to put forth, but if you really wanted it to be accurate, you'd need some sort of maturity I.D. or something.
All in all, rating systems DO suck. But what are you going to do about it? Bitch. That's what. Bitching is fun.
