NARA Files

from letter dated 31 May 2001, from National Archives and Records Administration:

A Court of Inquiry was convened to look into the sinking of the Hector. A copy of the Report of the Loss of the USS Hector by the captain, Master Joseph Newell, was located in this court of inquiry, Record Group 125, Records of Proceedings of Courts of Inquiry, Boards of Investigation, File #6610. Also within this file was the Roll Call Marine Detachment as Passengers on the USS Hector.... Also included for your records is the Report of detachment of marines en route to Guantanamo, via the USS Hector, that was also an exhibit in the court of inquiry. The Court of Inquiry file #6610 for the Hector is in three folders with approximately 600 pages of testimony and exhibits.

Record group 45, Navy Subject File 1911-1927, also contained a file on the Hector. In this file are the communications sent and received prior to the sinking of the Hector and communications sent after the sinking regarding salvage operations. Enclosed from this file is the brief history of the Hector. This file consisted of three folders of approximately 350 pages.

We examined the U.S. Lighthouse tender logs for tender Cypress. According to the log for July 14, 1916, the ship rescued 22 men from the USS Hector including marines Thomas J. Carlin, William Troisell, P.E. Hor (?), C.A. McCarthy, W.R. Fisher, W. Thomas and G.Otto. We are unable to provide paper copies of the log because of the fragile condition of the volume
