21) Who in the Church had
the authority to determine which books belonged in the New Testament canon and
to make this decision binding on all Christians? If nobody has this authority,
then can I remove or add books to the canon on my own authority?
The Question hopes we will conclude the absence of authority will result in
chaos. However, that conclusion is inconsistent with historical fact.
Recall Question 20:
20) How did the early Church evangelize and
overthrow the Roman Empire, survive and prosper almost 350 years, without
knowing for sure which books belong in the canon of Scripture?
The premise of Question 20 refutes the implication of Question 21,
acknowledging the church did quite well without pope, magisterium,
and their lists of canon.
Evidently the church does its best work when Roman Catholics are hiding in the
catacombs.....(Do you think they would mind returning
there so we can complete the work?....that's a joke!)
