Title: As They Danced

Another masquerade tonight, another excuse to go out, another way to get Louis to dress up. He seemed quieter tonight, more so than was usual for our Creole gentleman, though he was generally soft spoken. He gave me shy looks, his eyes unusualfull of an emotion I have hardly seen in him for melove. We had fought last night, throwing words, useless words at each other for hours, Claudia's eyes following us like it was some sporting match. She smiled, her lips up-turning as Louis' eyes shot venom at me, I, recoiling at this beautiful creature so angry with me. But oh how beautiful he was, the warm blood flushing his cheeks. It was all him, for he had yet to feed during our heated banter.

I couldn't resist as we fought, I prodded and poked at his sensitive areas until he clearly had had enough. Already our relationship was about as strained as was possible for us to still live under one roof, yet here I was, making it worse. But he would never leave me, he could never leave me. Eventually even Claudia, who smirked through this, watching Louis' growing hate, began to grow bored and wandered away. Her light footsteps barely heard above our voices. But I was glad she was gone. She had gotten too close to Louis now, he was mine, yet she was turning himagainst me. They were always together, he always chose her over me. He would now always choose her over me

His accent was heavy, and his lilting voice strained as his volume tried to dominate mine. But he could never beat me, never will.

"You common street scum, you lower class bastard." he yelled at me. How dare he, I had always suspected he thought I had been poor, but was always too polite to mention such a topic. He hadn't even known of my title, yet he could spout such lies about me.

I had hit him, a red line of hate glaring from his well-defined cheekbone, blood running delicately down his face. Surprised, he had hit me back, perhaps unintentionally, just a reaction, but it served to heat me even more. His heel caught the edge of the carpet, making him tumble back as he moved away from me. Falling down straight on top of him, knocking the wind from both of us as I fell, our sharp hip bones grinding together causing more pain.

Yet, I couldn't quite feel anything, for as I looked at his face, flushed, bloody, his eyes had never looked so lovely. I kissed him, lowering my lips on the gentle flower of his mouth, pushing past his lips to the warm cavern within. For long moments we lay there, kissing like two lovers, my arms around him. When I drew back, he was blushing. I immediately withdrew and stood when the entrance of Claudia was heard. Louis sat up, looking tousled, any evidence of the love for me on his features, now gone. Only the feelings for our child evident. She saw him on the floor and came to his aid, though none was needed, and I was again left on the outside. Her chosen over myself.

But here we were, at the ball, Claudia conversing with two other small children, dominating them with her skill, controlling them. Louis wasn't dancing, and neither was I, which was rare. All the young ladies, always asking us to dance. Louis, always too gracious to say no. He came up to me now, his green eyes still shy, imploring. We hadn't spoken, even shared a look since yesterday at the scene of our kiss. Now he looked directly into my eyes and whispered a question.

"Dance with me Lestat?" he asked, his voice so soft, so low. Coming from that beautiful pink mouth. It was very nearly unheard of for two men to dance together, in public, but I didn't care. Who ever knew of the Vampire Lestat to care what anyone thought. I very nearly said yes, took up his offer, but the piercing blue eyes I saw when I looked over his shoulder made me pause. So I hurt him, like I always do. Claudia already hated me, did I really need to give her a reason to end our family?

"Why would I want to dance with you?" I asked, intentionally turning away and walking towards a group of young women, looking as if I intended to ask one of them to dance.

I watched from a dark corner, the hurt look on Louis' face for a moment. But Claudia soon approached him, and it seems she had asked him to dance, for she led him by the hand out onto the dance floor. The young women were awed by Louis, finding it so sweet that he would dance with his 'little daughter'. I wanted him to love me, I wanted there to be the love I had always wanted between us.

But Claudia was in the way, and there was nothing I could doas they danced
