· Open WB/1. Walk round and check that S have completed the exercise. · S answer the ex again, I write the words and their numbers on the board. · Write ( show) this sentence: When
they died, they sank to the bottom of the sea. · Ask: How many sentences are there? (One), yes there is only one sentence but the sentence has two clauses: 1. A time clause 2. A main clause. · Say that a clause must have a verb and a subject. Sometimes, it has other words as well. · Ask: Which words are in the time clause and which words are in the main clause? · Use a coloured chalk to separate the clauses as: time clause main clause When
they died, they sank to the bottom of the sea. · S say the subject and the verb in each clause:

they died, they sank to the bottom of the sea · S repeat the sentence many times. · Ask S to change the sentence so that the main clause comes first, before the time clause as: They
sank to the bottom of the sea when they
died. · Say that the meaning of the sentence has not change but their is a comma in one sentence. · The rule for using the commas: When the time clause comes first, you put a comma after it. ·
