Fire Fighters

Grade Level:

3rd

Materials:

• A book about fire fighters

• Some pictures of equipment fire fighters use. Include paramedic equipment also.

Objectives:

                After completing this unit the students will

1.  Write the duties of a fire fighter.

2.  List three to five pieces of equipment a fire fighter uses.

Anticipatory Set:

        We all know a fire fighter is a person who fights fires and teaches us how to be safe around fires as well as the dangers of fires.  What do you think are some of the other duties that a fire fighter has?  List the suggestions on the board.  Now we are going to take a little tour of a fire station, by reading this book.  Suggestions: "Barney tours the Fire Station", "Curios George goes to the Fire Station". 

Procedures: 

1. Where do we find fires?  (in a fire place, a house on fire, at a camp site , where people cook outside (grills) some stoves in our house, forest fires, ect.) .  

2. Discuss importance of 911.  Emphasis it is only for emergencies, but the importance of the number in getting help.  --  If there was a fire in our homes we would think of this as an emergency and we would then use 911.  So besides using 911 for the police we old also use 911 to get a hold of the fire fighters to come put out fires.  

3. Discuss a fire fighters job.  Fire fighters have many responsibilities besides fighting fires.  They also serve as Paramedics, who help people before they can get to the hospital.  They help in many other ways too.  They help rescue people in floods, they help get cats who go up telephone poles and can't get down, they do inspections in restaurants to educate in prevention of fires, and many, many other responsibilities.

4. Explain that firemen have to stay at the fire station no matter how long their work day is.  They have a kitchen in the fire station, and even sleep there.  If their is an emergency, they have to stop whatever they are doing, and rush to help.

Closure:

                We will review what kinds of tools a fire fighter uses when fighting fires, we will also talk about fire safety. 

Evaluation:

                The students will write three to five things a fire fighter uses when putting out fires.  They will also tell me about two duties a fire fighter has.
