Fauchelevent is an old man who is saved by Jean Valjean of dying crushed under his fallen cart.  Before this fact, he was one of the rare enemies Valjean still had at Montreuil-sur-mer at the time when he was the Mayor, Monseuir Magdlene.  When Valjean arrived at Montreuil for the first time, Fauchelevent, who was an amanuensis and a paesant, had a business of his own, that had begun to decay.  When he saw Valjean, who was a simple worker,  became rich, while he, that was the owner of his own businness,  was almost ruined, he could not stand it, and was full on envy.  When he was completely ruined, and as he was alone with no family, and he only had a horse and a cart, he had to become a carter to live.
One day his horse and cart fall over him, crushing his legs. Valjean was passing at that moment and he stopped to help old Fauchelevent. He got under the cart and with great strenght he pushed up the cart so that Fauchelevent could go out.
Valjean takes Fauchelevent to his own hospital, attended by Soeur Simplice, and buys his cart and horse paying him a thousand francs.  Fauchelevent recovers but his knee was severed injured so he would never walk straight again. Valjean gets him a job as a gardener at a convent of nuns in the district of Saint Antoine in Paris.  Since then, Fauchelevent would venerate Valjean forever,  and he would retribute him what he done for him,  when Valjean arrives  with Cosette at the convent, escaping from Javert's persecution. Fauchelevent hides Valjean and Cosette in the convent and introduces him with the nuns as his brother.  Valejean would work in the convent helping Fauchelevent in the garden and Cosette would study with the nuns.
