Eponine is Th�rnardier's eldest daughter. She is a "rose in misery". "A very young girl... a livid creature, emaciated and lean; she only wore a blouse and a skirt over a trembling and miserable nakedness. Her hair was tight with a ribbon and another one hold her skirt, and her thin shoulders could be seen lightly outside the blouse. With a blonde and linphatic paleness, she had dirty clavicles, redish hands, and a deep and half-opened mouth where some teeth were missed; her eyes had a swadlled and daring but low glance. Her forms were the ones of an aborted creature and her look of a corrupted old woman; fifty and fifteen years intermixed; one of those creatures that are weak and horrible at the same time and that make one to tremble or to cry". She helps her father in his dirty jobs, writting the letters Th�rnardier sends to rich people asking for charities. When she meets Marius she falls in love with him, and she only seeks his happinness, eventough she has to renounce to his love. She is Marius's guardian angel, she finds Cosette's address for him and she even confronts her father for keeping Cosette saved for Marius. She loves Marius so much that she even gives her life for saving his. |
