Number of people coming to the site ?
The counter shows how many times people have visited the page, regardless of time of whether its me testing the links or you seeing updates.

How do I know that everybody is vanishing form the site?
Well if you use the web sever of Geocities to store your website they give you a damn lot of cool stuff. And making obvious generalisations from data given on OS, time of day they visited, screen size (resolution) and many more
For example during the first 2 weeks after the musical MacOS and MacOS X ran pretty much the second preferred OS behind Windows XP
