The Top 10 Questions

Asked of a Foreigner in Thailand

10.    How much do you pay for rent?  ("Ka chao bahn deuan la tao rai?")                   (A Thai is here politely trying to gauge your level of wealth)

9.     Can you eat Thai food?  ("Gin ahahn thai bpen mai?")

8.     How old are you?  ("Ayoo tao rai?")

7.     Are you married?  ("Tang ngaan leao reu yang?")

6.     Where are you from?  ("Mah jahk nai?")

5.     Can you speak Thai?  ("Poot thai dai mai?")

4.      How are you?  ("Sabai dee reu?")

3.     Is/Was it fun?   ("Sanuk mai?")

2.    Where are you going?  ("Bai nai?")

1.     Have you eaten yet?  ("tahn kao low reu yang?")

You will undoubtedly be confronted during your stay in Thailand with some or all of these questions.   If your answer to question #5 is "Yes", then the questions may subsequently be delivered in Thai.  As you can see from question #1 and #3,  food and fun are very important elements in Thai society.   There is often a reason why a Thai will ask you a particular question.  For example, they want to know if they are older or younger than you so that they know how to address and interact with you.  They want to know how familiar you are with Thai society.  Often, the Thai is just being polite in asking questions or using the opportunity to practice their English.   Being prepared for these questions will help make your daily life in Thailand easier.
