Sigh!
Oh Pascal my darling my head is killing me! You know how I utterly hate to be inconvenienced and foiled and that woman has done it to me again. But NO I will not admit defeat. Just… just sidetracking. I was sidetracked, yes that is, delayed. And I do not think that it is so bad but I hate it nonetheless.
It seemed as if my plan was working beautifully just as I had described to you. I had planted the seeds of distrust in Tammy Keane, had watered them and they had bloomed instantly. I had a short lunch with Mrs. Keane yesterday and she had said in such gloating terms how the group had actually snubbed Mrs. Roy and how Mimi was certain to be feeling the sting of rejection. Success yes?
Bah! I was a fool to think it would be so simple.
This morning I called Mrs. Foote for a brunch perhaps, somewhere nice. And there was a pause and she turned me down, no I don’t think so she had said. Of course I asked, well maybe next time? No I don’t think so; she replied and then abruptly, hung up! Certainly there was something wrong, it was obvious. I was miffed, yes.
So I called Mrs. Keane and I figured Tammy loved me now, I was her pet how could she turn me away. Barely had I said my hello’s when Tammy said, “Oh Jacquelyn… hi… Look are you sure you told me the truth about everything that happened?”
“Of course!” I replied.
“Oh,” Tammy replied. “Well, honey, it’s kind of confusing because Jennifer seems to think you’re lying or not telling the whole truth.”
“What?” I exclaimed, feigning all the innocence I could. “Why would I be lying?”
“Well,” Tammy said, “It’s not like Jennifer to just come up with a contradictory idea like this so it is odd. I mean honestly, it isn’t all my business but she said, well she insinuated that perhaps you and Patrick were…”
“Mon Dieu!” I exclaimed and I tried to defend myself and Tammy comforted me and Pascal I did all I could but it was obvious that the damage was done. The wives and girlfriends will not completely abandon Mimi because now they are no longer sure that they have just cause.
Such a horrible mood I was in that this part of my plan should fall through like this. I was about to admit defeat and then HE called.
You know who I mean of course? It seems that I’ve become a pregame ritual for Patrick just like his ridiculous spaghetti lunch. I told him that I was available and he was looking for a little distraction before he left for lunch and was wondering if I was in the same mood.
I won’t go into the details of the encounter, it was lovely as usual and I decided to get some information from him. I asked him, quite simply how things were going with his little plans and he found that amusing, called me a nosy kitten. He said that Cecile of course was an uptight, frigid little thing and that Daniel’s engagement to her is making things more difficult. As to be expected I suppose.
He then laughed and told me that Jennifer Foote had been attacking Mimi for some reason and trying to turn the rest of the wives against her. “Oh?” I said acting only mildly interested. His grin was so delicious, so boyish and he told me how he stopped the damage at the root.
Pascal! He took advantage of Jennifer while they were at a charity function, he did it to her in the bathroom with people in the next room! At any rate whatever he did to Jennifer scared the daylights out of the woman, and she now feels beholden to Mimi. As a result, Jennifer has become now an ally of that woman and a full out snubbing of Mimi will be impossible. Damn that man!
It was hard to conceal my rage but I did nonetheless. I can try phase two.
“Ooo and how are things with Mimi and her little boy?” I asked. “Daniel?”
Patrick sighed and darkened. “She is taking forever!” he said. “I don’t see what the problem is.”
“Oh!” I exclaimed. “There’s a problem?”
“Maybe she’s not interested that much,” he said.
“Oh of course she’s interested,” I said, “The last few times I have seen her, the boy is all she talks about.”
Patrick narrowed his eyes, oo what delicious anger he has.
“Really?” he said.
“Yes,” I replied. “You should see how animated she becomes, she glows, she’s enraptured, I would have thought you would have noticed. It certainly is a tasty assignment you have set for her. I think she appreciates every moment of it. In fact to hear her talk about him it’s almost as if…”
And I paused and blushed and apologized.
“As if what?” He snapped.
“Oh forgive me,” I said. “I say far too much sometimes on things that are none of my business and well, perhaps I am reading too much into her words. She hasn’t expressed as much to you?”
He was silent for a minute and then he grumbled, “She does.”
I smiled, “Of course she would never prefer him over you, why would she? You’re such a beast!”
The look on his face was priceless, absolutely priceless. He gives his sweet wife free reign in these games, but he obviously knows how she can lose her heart. And he doesn’t like it………
