Chapter 34: Cecile IV—Look at Her Eyes

"Danny I don’t trust her," Cecile said in a low voice to Danny. She darted her eyes up to the stairs, making sure no one was standing there.

"What?" Danny asked. "Why?"

"It’s...there’s something about her that isn’t right..." Cecile said. She knew there was something, it was sitting at the tip of her teeth.

"Cecile," Danny said calmly, "What’s wrong with Mimi? She’s a sweet, generous woman."

"Mimi," Cecile said, almost spitting it out, "Well that for starters. What kind of woman calls herself, Mimi? It’s ridiculous!"

Danny shrugged. "I think it’s cute," he said.

"Cute?" Cecile asked. "Of course, that’s why she uses it, men think its cute. Danny I see the way she looks at other men, including you! She’s lustful!"

Cecile’s chest hurt when she saw Danny’s incredulous expression. Of course he wouldn’t understand. Why did she think he would?

"Cecile," Danny said in a tone she had never heard him use before. It was a stern, almost angry voice. "Why would you even think such a thing? She’s a married woman, with three kids. And, she is the one person you have to thank for us being able to even see each other! Remember whose idea it was? Hmm? Dammit, Cecile, she’s not even charging you a penny to stay here! I thought you, of all people would embrace gratitude."

The pain in Cecile’s breast worsened. It was eating away everywhere in her, boiling and stretching in her throat. It was that itchy feeling now, the one she always got before she cried. Cecile looked away from him, she wanted to say something, but she didn’t know what. She knew, though, that if she did, then she really would cry.

"I’m sorry," she finally squeaked.

The tears started pouring down now but she refused to sob. It was embarrassing, she couldn’t explain to Danny how she saw things.

"Aww," Danny sighed as he leaned over, draping his arm over her shoulders. "I know you’re stressed out you don’t mean any of it...I’m not surprised you said it actually."

Relief flooded through Cecile’s body and she leaned forward and sighed. He understood then! She wiped her face on her sleeve, doing her best to calm down and breathe. Finally, she sat up and looked at Danny’s liquid blue eyes, "You’re not surprised? Really?"

"Yeah," Danny said with a nod. "I spent a lot of time over here this week, and none with you. You’re a bit jealous."

This time hurt and anger cut through Cecile as she stood up. "Jealous?!" she almost shrieked. "Jealous?"

"Yup," Danny said calmly, "I understand, it’s OK."

Cecile made a small noise out of her throat and held out her hands but she couldn’t say anything. Not a thing. What was there to say? What did one say when they were too angry to think?

"Is it the French thing?" Danny asked. "I heard that most girls all agree that they hate French girls. It's OK, Cecile."

"No, no, no, no!" Cecile muttered putting her face in her palms. "It’s something else. Look at her eyes! Danny, look at her eyes!"
"Cecile!" Danny snapped. "Stop it! You’re being paranoid."

"Danny," Cecile began again, she had to make him see, she just had to.

"Am I interrupting anything?" a voice said sweetly behind them.

Danny blanched and Cecile felt her heart crash to a stop in her chest. That was Michele’s voice and it was almost at her ear. She could only stare in Danny’s eyes, she didn’t want to turn around. How did that woman come downstairs unnoticed like that? Of course, any cat can walk quietly.

Danny slowly shook his head, "Mimi..." he began.

"No," Cecile said closing her eyes tightly and then opening them as she turned around to face Michele. If the cat had heard, then she would say. "You’re not interrupting a thing."

Michele raised her eyebrows and smiled with half of her mouth. Cecile knew it was because of that bruise there on the side of it, but it looked like a nasty smile. The woman had the gall to bat her eyes at her and look clueless. "Oh, I’m glad," Michele said with an infuriating sigh, a flippant sigh, a post-orgasmic sounding sigh....at least its what Cecile thought a post-orgasmic sigh would sound like. "I hate interrupting people when they’re speaking of important things. Who knows what important things I could spoil! And I don’t want to spoil a thing. Not between you two. You’ve been through too much already."

Michele looked deeply into Cecile’s eyes, and grabbed her hand, squeezing it....hard. Cecile inhaled a gasp and couldn’t say a thing, she could only stare back into Michele’s eyes. She couldn’t look away. The woman had the gaze of a snake! After what seemed like forever, and Cecile was beginning to think that her hand would snap, Michele let it go. Oh my God! Cecile thought, she must have heard everything!

Michele took a step back, blinking and running a hand through her dirty blond hair. Highlighted no doubt! This time, she looked at Danny with that dirty smile. "Daniel, you’ll be playing in the game tonight, no?"

Cecile bit her lip. Of course she knew that Danny wasn’t playing tonight!

"Nah," Danny said, "My bell’s still rung. Damaged goods."

"Ooooh," Michele pouted, "I’m sorry, so horrible!"

"Aww," Danny said in a submissive, sorta little boy way. Cecile turned around and looked at Danny in horror, but he didn’t see her expression. He was looking at his hands and blushing. He was under her spell!

Cecile looked back at Michele, her eyes wide. Michele met Cecile’s gaze, there was a smug sort of blank look to it and then she was radiant again. "Well, then, you’ll have to bring Cecile to the game. We can all sit in the Sakic box. It will be fun."

"Yeah!" Danny crowed. "Cecile this will be great! We can be together for your first hockey game!"

Cecile’s stomach boiled. "Oh.." she said, "I don’t....."

"Brilliant!" Michele said with a girlish giggle. "You won’t regret it! See Daniel, it’s not hard to get her to a game. It’s easy! I don’t know what you were complaining about. You’ll find that most things are easy if you just try."

Cecile looked at Danny who was making a nervous little face. He was talking about her to Michele? He talked about their relationship to her!! Ooooh he knew he had just blew the big one right there! Just look at that guilty sweat on his chin!

"Bon!" Michele chirped. "We’ll leave at five thirty, Cecile wear something pretty, just in case the camera’s catch you! I’m going upstairs to send the children to wake Patrick, see you later."

Michele leaned forward and Cecile just couldn’t move she hated herself for not moving. That woman kissed, actually flashed Cecile a quick look as she kissed her Danny on the forehead leaving a lipstick mark. Danny reddened and laughed and Cecile still couldn’t make herself do a thing as Michele grabbed her sore hand again and kissed that too, her blue eyes stabbing her with a quick glance.

Just like that, Michele turned around and glided up the stairs and out of the room, leaving a trail of two hundred dollar an ounce perfume wafting through the air.

Cecile exhaled through her mouth, almost collapsing forward as she did so. She turned and looked at Danny who was smiling. "You’re going to have so much fun!" he said, "See! I told you she was a sweet lady."

"Oh...yeah," Cecile said forcing a smile. Danny had no clue, no suspicion. Of course he didn’t, he was a man. Fine then, Cecile thought, she wasn’t going to lose Danny and she wasn’t going to run either. She was going to stay right here, and she was going to win! "A lot of fun," Cecile said. "I can feel it!"
