Sir John Herries was a witness to a charter of King Robert III, confirming a donation of David Flemming, Lord of Biggar, to the monastery of Holyroodhouse in 1393. In 1397 King David II granted a charter to Sir John Herries for the Barony and land of Terregles. He was in England in 1405 and 1407 as a hostage for the Earl of Douglas, and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Shrewsbury.
