He served as a tutor to his nephew William, Third Lord Herries of Terregles. He received sasine from Vedastus Neilson of Maidenpape in terms of a charter granted to him 4 Aug 1518. On the resignation of the lands by Neilson King James V granted a crown charter of the lands of Maidenpape to Roger Herries on 5 Jun 1520.
