PONTIAC for 2002
Aztek
All that goofy cladding is gone! A spoiler and larger wheels jazz up the Aztek a bit (like it needs it). The same 185-hp 3.4L V6 powers it again this year. Trims have been, well, trimmed to just two: Aztek and Aztek with VersaTrak, a system which routs power to the rear reals when it detects slippage. Features include leather, astroroof, OnStar, Pioneer 10-speaker stereo, center console cooler, and the ubiquitious camping package with tent and inflatable bed.
*4-Star NHTSA Rollover Resistance rating
*J.D.Power & Associates most appealing entry-level SUV (believe it or not)
Competitors: Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4, Ford Escape, Honda Element
Bonneville
Now in its 3rd year of this generation, the Bonnies have changed slightly since 2000. New front and rear facias grace the base SE while new wheels, revamped center consoles, and oval exhaust tips complete the SSE and SSEi. The tried-and-true 3.8L 3800 Series II 205-hp V6 power the SE and SSE while the SSEi gets the supercharged 240-hp version. Features include leather, astroroof, OnStar, load-leveling suspension with air compressor, heads-up display, Monsoon 8-speaker stereo, 12-way power seats, dual-zone climate control, and Stabilitrak.
*IIHS Best Pick for 40-mph offset frontal crash
Competitors: Chrysler 300M, Lincoln LS, Lexus ES300, Acura TL, Infiniti I35
Firebird
2002 being the last year of the F-body Firebird, a special 35th Anniversary Trans Am Collector's Edition is available, featuring special paint schemes, custom badging, and the WS6 package, featuring the 5.7L 310-hp V8. Models include the base Firebird with its 200-hp 3800 Series II V6 (coupe & conv.), Formula, and Trans Am (coupe & conv.) each with the 310-hp V8.
Competitors: Ford Mustang
Grand Am
The little Grand Am is still Pontiac's best-seller. Trims range from the base SE to the SE1, GT, and top of the line GT1, all available in 2- and 4-door form. SE's have 4-cyls while the GT's feature V6s. New items include the new 2.2L EcoTech 4cyl on the SEs and new 16-inch wheels on GTs. Standard features include bucket seats, fog lights, spoiler, dual airbags, ABS, and A/C. Options include 8-speaker Monsoon stereo, chrome wheels, leather, and astroroof.
*Good Housekeeping Women's Automotive Satisfaction Award
Competitors: Mitsubishi Galant, VW Jetta, Chrysler Sebring/Dodge Stratus
