LES "Chess Boards - Si! Potato Coach - No!" GOLDEN:
CHESS BOARDS FOR THE SKATE BOARD PARK

Oak Park is home to several nursing homes, as well as the Heritage House, Oaks, Mills Tower, Oak Park Arms, and Holley Court Terrace retirement communities. These residents deserve to be served by the park district as much as other members of the community. I therefore propose the placement of granite-base chess/checker boards in the parks near these residences for the use of all. Austin Gardens and Mills Park granite chess/checker boards would serve those in Holley Court and Mills Tower, respectively. Whatever is finally decided for Stevenson playground, chess/checker boards could be placed there for the residents of the nearby Oaks and Heritage House to both view the youngsters and to provide activity for them themselves. Several could be placed on the grounds of the pools.

The boards could be paid by donors to honor or remember, as with the tree program. The names of those honored or remembered would be engraved in the granite or a bronze plaque.

For those without chess or checker sets, they could be made available at the various senior residences or at nearby government facilities such as the tourist bureau, Historical Society, or the pool offices. If we choose to be elegant, we could use jade chess boards suitably bolted into the granite. These are available cheaply in Mexico, and if elected, I might be persuaded to volunteer for the buying trip. Of course, boards could also be placed under the shade in Lindberg (Greenfield) and Taylor Parks for the use of all residents. These would be placed so that people could watch the dogs scamper in the doggie park that I will be proposing as park district commissioner. 1
