A TRIBUTE TO THREE RIVERS STADIUM

On February 11, 2001, Three Rivers Stadium was imploded. It brought both joy and sadness to me. The first game that I went to was up in the "Peanut Gallery" above thrid base. My second game was more memerable. That was the game against the New York Mets in which the Pirates won the National League East title in 1970. My last game there was rather sad. My high school (Belle Vernon Area) had just lost in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL footbal champianship to West Allegheny. However, it was also the best time because I got to watch my daughter and my niece march out onto the firld at halftime of the game (she played the Mellophone and my niece Clarinet in the high school band)

Three Rivers Stadium served as home for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers. For one year, it was home to the USFL Pittsburgh Maulers (remember them?). Who could forget some of the greatest games in sports history there: the 10 inning No-Hitter, all the champianships won there by both the Pirates and the Steelers, and, of course, the greatest game in NFL history - "The Immaculate Reception".

And that wasn't all that was there!
There were many major concerts that were performed there. Who could forget the U2 Zoo TV concert? Other major concerts were done there as well. Artists such as Phil Collins, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones performed their music there. For those oldies fans, remember the thunderstorm during one of the oldies celebration concerts?
And of course, the Pittsburgh Penguins celebrated their second Stanley Cup at Three Rivers as well!

Now, it is just a memory like Forbes Field and Pitt Stadium before it. But the future looks just as bright with PNC Park and Heinz Field. More memorable events will be made at these places as well! WE WILL MISS YOU THREE RIVERS STADIUM!
