Harvey Dent suffers from multiple personalities, probably in its most extreme form. His Two-Face persona more than likely comes from his tragic and violent upbringing which mostly originated from his abusive late father.
Dents fascination with his coin, stem from the child abuse he received, from his father. Late at night his father would enter Harvey’s room and flip a coin. If it were tails Harvey would be beaten if heads, which it rarely was, he would be spared. The young Harvey suppressed his anger and hatred, which would prove to be unhealthy. Dents parents were revealed to have died in an automobile accident by Dents wife Grace.
Harvey managed to become the official D.A. for Gotham and later lost a case against a criminal called Kempler who explained to Harvey that he had an evil side and should let it out. Harvey did this and blew Kempler’s house up. Harvey, Gordon and the Batman begin to work as a team and actually prove most satisfactory.
Just before the trial of underworld crime boss, Boss Moroni, an intruder broke into Harvey’s home and tried to kill him. He proved unsuccessful and Harvey killed him with his own weapon.
At the trial, Moroni had managed to secure some acid from a traitorous partner of Dent and in the trial, Moroni through the acid scaring half of Dents face. Dent was taken to hospital but the scaring was extremely bad.
Dent stormed the D.A. head offices after leaving the hospital and went after his former partner. After bargaining Dent agreed to spare him in exchange for files that would help, “Two Face”, run the underworld. Two Face goes to flip the coin to decide but Batman smashes through the window. Fields is killed by Harvey and escapes.
