As a child Barbara Gordon and her friend had always dreamed about being a superhero � Super-Girl, Batgirl, Rocket-Girl. But while to Marcy they were just, fantasies to Barbara they became a way to escape her tragic and sad upbringing.
At an early age, preteen, she lost both her mother and father in a tragic automobile accident. Her father�s depression had lead to alcoholism, which had caused the accident. Barbara�s life would never be quite the same again � she was forced to abandon her known life in Ohio, her close friend Marcy, and move to the city of rooftops Gotham. Her friends may have been envious � she could even meet the Batman. Barbara even at this young age, had decided she�d meet this dark night. She commented on how smart Batman was, but added, �I�m going to be smarter though.�
Upon arriving in Gotham she discovered that her new adoptive (There have know been doubts to Barbara�s parentage, creating the possibility that James Gordon could be her real dad) James Gordon new and was friends with Batman. Out of admiration, and possibility self reliance Barbara began to train for seven years to become Batman�s partner in the fight against crime.
But things didn�t work quite that way. Barbara soon became side tracked with adult motivations. She, managed to skip a few years at school and went to Gotham State at the age of sixteen. Barbara was a gifted girl, with near if not genius level intelligence and photographic memory.
Barbara decided to, in the early days at college and recapture the excitement of dreaming of being a super-hero and made a fully functional bat-suite. She tested it at the police gym and hoped to surprise her father. But on the way to the party Barbara Gordon happened upon a criminal named Killer-Moth, who had taken hostage millionaire Bruce Wayne and his ward Dick Grayson. Batgirl gave an ample chance for the two to switch to their other roles and Batgirl meets Batman.
Batman soon works out who she is and offers to train Batgirl, as a superhero. He may, I believe have done this as a favour to Gordon. If she were planning to continue as Batgirl, she would need training. And so it was that Barbara Gordon became the Batgirl.
What made Batgirl a success was her humanness. She unlike the dark knight had frequent plagues of self-doubt. She often question the real effectiveness she had as Batgirl, and if she had any. Barbara herself played apart and not second fiddle to her other ego. She ran for congress and won, it was more Barbara was Batgirl than the other way round.
Her Ohio friend Marcy returned in the key turning point of Barbara�s life, �The Last Batgirl Story� which trailed Barbara�s decision to retire from the life of Batgirl. In her early carer Batgirl is �killed� by her most feared foe, Cormorant, and in this story she finally manages to conquer him and her fear. Marcy also reveals she knows Batgirl and Barbara are actually the same person. With Cormorant defeated Barbara is able to put the Batgirl guise behind her without regret.
Sadly though, Barbara was to receive a dashing blow in her life. The sadistic Joker used Barbara to get at her father, and shot her causing the poor Barbara to be confined to a wheal chair. Barbara Gordon went in hiding, broken and battered for several months. In her eyes at the time she felt defeated; partly because to the Joker it meant nothing he only used her to get at her father.
While hiding from the world Barbara Gordon spent her time in secret trying to solve one of her fathers own cases of a criminal who was a computer genius. She began to realise that computers are very valuable tools. She began to learn to train herself in an ancient art of stick fight and built a life for herself that wasn�t restricted because of her wheelchair.
Barbara Gordon to on the identity of Oracle after a dream, Oracle was the Greek Goddess of All Knowledge and Wisdom. Barbara managed to obtain a grant and new premises from Bruce Wayne. And she turned to the Wayne Clock tower into a high-tech library.
As Oracle she is probably more effect than when she was Batgirl. Few do not know her identity; Even Commissioner Gordon who had discovered she was Batgirl by accident. Barbara knows works closely with Black Canary. And is currently seeing Dick Grayson at last!
