There’s very little for sure about the Joker’s past, he has given details but considering there is no sanity in his mind it has to be taken very lightly.
The Joker gave an account of his “origin” the once which went as follows:
He used to be quite normal, and worked as a lab assistant. He had a wife, who was expecting there child, and dreams of becoming a stand up comedian, which for a time he followed. He left his job at Ace Chemicals, and pursued his dream. Although it was non-successful and he was branded a failure, and unable to support himself or his wife he took on the life of a criminal, reluctantly.
He got evolved with some crooks that planned to rob a building next to Ace Chemicals, Monarch Playing Card Company. He was all for it, until, his poor wife died testing a faulty baby milk warmer. Racked by guilt he wanted no part of the heist, but was forced.
He took on the mantle of “Red Hood” and slowly began to slip into insanity. The Batman stopped the robbery, and the Joker believed him to be a hell demon, and he escaped by jumping into a chemical vat.
He was washed up on a river bank and he later saw his reflection. Chalk white skin, ruby red lips, and green hair just like the playing card Joker. The poor fellow felt this was another kick in the teeth by life, and snapped becoming the Joker.
