Harleen was never an angel. As Batman himself said, �In her own way, Alfred, Harley Quinn�s as dangerous as the Joker. Her playful exterior hides an obsessive and dangerous mind.�
As a teenager Harleen won a scholarship to Gotham State University, for Gymnastics, but as always she had her motives. Harley wanted a degree from the highly revered Psychology Department. But she didn�t want to study for it � though she passed with extremely high grades, got by her own means: seducing etc. She had hoped to release a line of self-help and tell all books.
After graduation Harleen turned down many prestigious jobs, going to work at Arkham Asylum: For the Criminally Insane. Making a name for herself on the first day. Asked why she chose Arkham she replied, �You can�t deny there�s an element of glamour to these super-criminals.� And no sooner had she gotten there, she attracted the attention of a certain criminal: the Joker.
Harleen was a natural choice of a new toy for the clown prince. He was attracted to her �name� and no doubt her suggestible mind. He left a rose, in her office and set the ball rolling. Rather than report that he�d been out of his cell, Harleen set up a counselling session with the Joker and began setting up regular meetings and slipping under his spell. Soon he was giving her therapy.
The Joker had managed to break out of Arkham, again, and left the worrying Harley to pine for him. Finally Batman brought a beaten Joker back to Arkham, to Harleen�s horror. She broke down and cried, in front of the Batman, and finally snapped. That night she stole, a jester costume and other clown related goodies, and rescued the Joker from his cell. And thus, the �� New Improved � Harley Quinn�.
Harley has formed a friendship and special bond with the villainess Poison Ivy and worked with her on many occasions, and recently been seen with the Catwoman.
