LEONID ALAVERDOV was born April 14, 1933, in the city of Baku (Azerbaijan, former USSR). In 1954, he graduated from the Tbilisi Aviation College. In 1963, he graduate from the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry.

He began designing industrial products and interiors, and working in the areas of industrial graphics and urban improvement. Soon Leonid became one of the leading specialists in the Baku Institute of Design. He was awarded numerous medals and certificates for participating in All-Union Exhibitions of Economic Achivements. He later became a lecturer at the Baku Art Institute and wrote many articles on design problems and methods of teaching design.

Leonid Alaverdov began creating art works by embossing metal in 1965, and has been producing artistic tapestries since 1974. His treatment of folk culture (especially Jewish, mid-Eastern and Russian themes using modern tapestry techniques, some of which he originated), is uniquely decorative and appealing. These works have been displayed at exhibitions in Baku, Volgograd, and Dushanbe. In 1985, he was elected the First Secretary of the Designers Union of Azerbaijan.

Leonid Alaverdov has been a permanent resident of the United States since 1993, and became a citizen in 1999. His newer works contain American themes and reflect his pleasure and pride in his adopted country. In 1996 he became a member of the Artists League of Brooklyn. He participated in approximately 30 exhibitions organized by this League, UJA Federation, and Senior Citizens Center of Bensonhurst.
