Al's Gardening Tips

There are three components needed, Water, Soil, and Sunlight.

Waterwise Gardening

Waterwise gardening involves laying out the garden to use water as efficiently as possible. Zoning plants that are big water users together to water them without waste and the plants that need less water together where irrigation would be minimal or even unnecessary.

Other things to take into account are the soil, weather, your time that can be spent for care and upkeep.

Drip irrigation and underground sprinklers set to turn and off on timers can greatly enhance the project.

Soil improvements can increase the soils ability to conserve water. Mulches put around existing crops and over certain soils, greatly reduce the weed growth, reduce evaporation and slow erosion.

Low-water use plants perform quite well with very little water. There are trees, shrubs, flowering plants, ground covers and seasonal colors. Choose those that will adapt well for your region.

Soil

Despite its plain appearence, soil is a complex mixture of organic matter, mineral particles, microorganisms, water and air.

The mineral particle shape determine the classifications, ranging from clay (the smallest), sand (the largest). A third variety combines sand and clay as is called loam.

Knowing what type you have will determine how you water and which plants to use. addin organic matter can improve aeration and water penetration. Soil air is vital to good root growth and the health of the soil.

Each region varies on the best time to plant trees, shrubs, grass and vegatables. in cold weather regions usually plant just after spring when the soil can be worked. in the hotter regions just as the cooler weather comes. Summer is not the best time unless you live in a cool summer area. Hot weather can stress new plants and make them slower to establish.

Watering in the late evening or early morning is recommended.
