WHAT THE BEST DRESSED CHRISTIANS
ARE WEARING

Introduction

1. It's natural to be concerned about how we look. While particular fashions change from time to time, those who pay attention to their appearance will be more highly regarded than people who are indifferent to the way they dress.

2. It is even more important to be concerned about our appearance to the eyes of God. The Greek word enduo -- "to put on a garment; to clothe oneself" -- is used numerous times in the New Testament. Following some of the usages of this word teaches us some valuable lessons about living as Christians.

I. THE APOSTLES WERE CLOTHED WITH THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

A. Luke 24:49 (NKJV) "Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high." The KJV and NKJV translators translated enduo as "endued" in this verse. However, it is the same word. The American Standard says, "And behold, I send forth the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be clothed with power from on high."

B. This is the same promise recorded in Acts 1:5 (NKJV) "for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

1. In both instances, the promise was limited to the apostles [Luke 24:33; Acts 1:2 (NKJV) until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen,].

2. "Baptized" is used in a figurative sense in Acts 1:5. The apostles were not literally dipped, plunged, or immersed in an element called "the Holy Spirit." Thayer's lexicon gives the meaning "overwhelm" as a meaning of "baptizo." This describes the time when the Holy Spirit "came upon" the apostles. Jesus had said in Acts 1:8 (NKJV) "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

C. The coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles "clothed" them with power.

1. They spoke in tongues (languages) [Acts 2:4-8 (NKJV) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 "And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?]

2. They performed many wonders and signs [Acts 2:43; Acts 5:12]. This included causing a lame man to walk [Acts 3:6-7]. Many other miracles were performed [Acts 5:15-16 (NKJV) so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. 16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.]

3. These miracles not only "did good" to those afflicted but, more importantly, caused people to believe and obey the gospel [Hebrews 2:3-4 (NKJV) how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

II. BAPTIZED BELIEVERS ARE CLOTHED WITH CHRIST.

A. Galatians 3:26-27 (NKJV) For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

1. Those baptized into Christ have put on Christ. "Put on" translated the same word, enduo, which means "clothed." So the NASB says Galatians 3:27 (NASB) For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

2. Baptism is the act of getting dressed in our new spiritual clothing. An article of clothing hanging in your closet does no good. You must put it on to get any benefit from it. In baptism, we put on Christ.

B. Christians wear the uniform of a soldier in Christ's army.

1. Clothed with the armor of light [Romans 13:12 (NKJV) The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.] The illustration here is a soldier casting off his night clothes and dressing in his uniform. The "night clothes" are called the works of darkness. Christians should rid themselves of any vestiges of the old life. We should not be seen out of uniform. We're to be dressed in the armor of light.

2. The breastplate in our Christian armor is our main defensive weapon. It is intended to protect us from the enemy's sword and spear.

a. Ephesians 6:14 says we should be clothed with the breastplate of righteousness.

b. 1 Thessalonians 5:8 (NKJV) But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.

c. These verses do not contradict one another. Instead, they offer two different perspectives on this critical article in the Christian's equipment. Possessing righteousness, faith, and love are all necessary if we are to defend ourselves against Satan.

3. We need to be wearing the whole armor of God to be successful in the war we have to fight with the devil [Ephesians 6:11 (KJV) Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.]

III. SAVED PEOPLE ARE IDENTIFIED BY THEIR CLOTHING.

A. Different kinds of people are recognizable by the way they dress.

1. Doctor or nurse

2. Football player

3. Member of the Armed Services

B. The same is true of Christians.

1. It is literally true that some kinds of dress tell us a person is not a faithful Christian. {example: stripper}

2. The spiritual attire of Christians identifies us as people belonging to Jesus Christ.

a. New people [Ephesians 4:24 (NKJV) and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.]

b. Colossians 3:10-14 (NKJV) and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all. 12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

c. These qualities in your life identify you are a Christian just as surely as a fireman's hat shows his occupation to everyone around him.

CONCLUSION

1. Romans 13:14 (NKJV) But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. Are you clothed with Christ?

2. It is embarrassing to go somewhere when you're not dressed appropriately for the occasion.

a. I wouldn't want to go to a formal party dressed in cut-off jeans and a tee shirt.

b. Likewise, I'd feel out of place wearing a tuxedo to a baseball game.

3. Those fashion faux pas won't matter a few days after they happen. However, to appear before the judgment seat of Christ not wearing the right spiritual clothing is a mistake that will cost you for eternity. Be sure you're clothed with Christ!
